The first leg saw the Blues run out as 2-0 winners at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic. However, Lille had its fair share of opportunities but couldn’t capitalize.

Lille Slowly Improving

After winning Ligue 1 last season, it’s been a much different story this term for Lille. They’re currently in sixth place and a whole six points off Rennes for a European spot. Their form has improved lately though, winning two of their last three games and most recently playing to a scoreless draw with St. Etienne on Friday. Prior to that, Jocelyn Gourvennecc’s side beat Clermont and Lyon, scoring five goals in the process.

When it comes to Europe, Lille was actually impressive in the early stages of the campaign, finishing at the top of Group G with 11 points from six outings. The French outfit then rolled into London on February 22 and had no problems creating chances against a very rock-solid Chelsea backline, but the end product lacked. In fact, Lille enjoyed 49% of the ball, but only two of their 15 attempts found the target.

Unfortunately, their track record against the Blues isn’t great by any means, either. Gourvennecc’s men have lost all three meetings against the current UCL title-holders, tasting defeat in back-to-back fixtures in the 2019/20 edition in the group stages as well. Being down by two goals already, Lille certainly faces an uphill battle here.

Blues Flying High

There’s obviously been a lot of outside noise surrounding the club right now due to the Roman Abramovich saga, but Chelsea has done a tremendous job of focusing on the task at hand and finding results. Heading into Wednesday’s encounter, Thomas Tuchel’s group has secured eight wins in their last nine games, with their only loss coming in the League Cup final against Liverpool at the end of February. They’ve also won four in a row following a 1-0 victory against in-form Newcastle on the weekend.

While the competition in recent memory hasn’t been the most difficult, the Blues are playing consistent football. In the Champions League, the holders finished as runners-up in Group H to Juventus, conceding just four goals in six games while losing once.

There weren’t a lot of clear-cut opportunities for them in the first leg against Lille, but Chelsea made sure to put away a pair. Havertz smashed home a header in the eighth minute before Pulisic sealed the deal in the second half with a fine finish on a promising counter-attack started by N’Golo Kante.

Havertz in particular has been in tremendous form, scoring the lone goal on Sunday against the Magpies. He’s netted five times in his last five appearances and will definitely be leading the line in the second leg again ahead of Romelu Lukaku.

Lille vs Chelsea Prediction

Lille plays a mile better on home soil, but their struggles against the Blues in Europe are far too clear to ignore. Chelsea possesses one of the strongest backlines in the competition and they’ve rarely conceded in the Champions League this season. That being said, I like them on the moneyline and to keep a clean sheet.

Pick: Chelsea (-118), Chelsea to Win Nil (+218)
