Despite a strong start this year, it has been anything but smooth sailing for Borussia Monchengladbach in recent weeks. Unfortunately, this week they are tasked with their second leg fixture against Manchester City. Marco Rose’s side kept the scoreline modest in the first leg at home in Germany, but now they have to travel to the Etihad Stadium in what could be an utter demolition.

The Champions League is a competition that Manchester City and their Citizen army have wanted to get their hands on for quite some time. Nonetheless, the trophy has evaded them in recent years with heartbreak after heartbreak. Despite their two away goal advantage, expect Pep Guardiola and company to open this game up and not stop until the final whistle blows.

For Borussia Monchengladbach, they have not celebrated victory since February 3rd in a 2-1 triumph over Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. They have had a grueling run of games, going up against the likes of Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Dortmund, and Leverkusen. However, their poor form is undeniable and their position in the German table is all the proof you need. This fixture could be over quickly and do not expect Manchester City to close the floodgates once they open.

Monchengladbach Has Never Won In England

One glaring statistic in this fixture is that Borussia Monchengladbach has never won away from home to English opponents. In fact, they visited Manchester City in 2017 in what was their heaviest away defeat in the Champions League losing by four goals. Additionally. Monchengladbach has conceded twelve times in only six games, which will definitely not help them against Manchester City.

Furthermore, their offense has been stagnant as of late, only scoring once in their last three matches. Lars Stindl is the main source of creation with ten goals and five assists this season but he will have a tough go of it on Tuesday against Ruben Dias and John Stones. The center-back partnership for Manchester City has been dominant this season as they have held twelve clean sheets just since the turn of the year. While City’s attack is threatening, Monchengladbach’s ability to score is the more concerning question.

Manchester City Continue the Search for European Glory

Despite Monchengladbach’s struggles, the difference in this game really comes from the dominance of Manchester City. They have been simply great under Pep Guardiola and will go down as one of the great football dynasties of the 2010’s. However, this is the competition they inevitably always choke in despite their great domestic achievements.

This year feels drastically different. Whether it is the Dias effect in defense or the ferocity in attack being renewed, something feels new and dangerous about this Manchester City side. So dangerous that they have only lost one time in all competitions since November 25th, which is quite the feat. Having the Premier League basically wrapped up in their hands, they can now shift their attention to the most significant stage in Europe, in a leg that still needs closing.

Manchester City vs Borussia Monchengladbach Best Bet

With all of that being said, the best bet in this match is the under on 2.5 total goals with odds of +148. This pick has great value and is one that hit in the first leg between these two sides. Despite Monchengladbach’s continued struggles, they have had a brutal stretch of fixtures and they have kept themselves in most of the games. I could easily see this match repeating the reverse fixture and seeing Manchester City advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

My Pick: Under 2.5 total goals (+148)
