As football returns around Europe, transfer talk is heating up as we approach the summer. One of the hottest young talents that is expected to move elsewhere in the coming months is Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, who was a vital part of Ajax’s 2019 squad who made a heroic run to the Champions League Semifinals just a year ago.
With many players from the last season’s team having already moved on to bigger clubs such as Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt who went to Barcelona and Juventus, respectively, it’s only a matter of time until van de Beek follows suit. Hakim Ziyech is also set to join Chelsea on July 1st from the Dutch giants, while Man United continue to show serious interest in van de Beek.

One of Ajax’s Brightest Talents
Donny van de Beek has had an impressive career with Ajax to date, coming through the youth system at the club. He made his senior debut as a teenager in November of 2015 in a Europa League fixture against Celtic. The following season he went on to make four starts for Ajax, the same year they lost to his next potential club, Manchester United in the Europa League final. In 2017/18, he became a regular in the starting eleven in Amsterdam, making 34 appearances and bagging eleven goals.
It was last season where the now 23-year old broke through with Ajax and really became an instrumental part of the club, scoring 17 goals and tallying 13 assists across all competitions. This year, he’s struggled at times, netting just eight goals, with the absences of de Jong and de Ligt definitely felt with Erik ten Hag’s side. But nonetheless, he’s an exciting player on the attack who has tremendous pace and skill, while possessing the ability to bag goals and also creatively set them up. van de Beek is also a talented player on the defensive end, always tracking back into his own half and making crucial tackles.
He’s currently valued at 39.6 million euros, but with COVID-19 looming, that number could go down. According to the Daily Mail, Madrid was willing to pay almost 50 million for the Ajax player, while Man United said they would fork out 36 million for van de Beek.
Best Bet
It’s no secret that the pandemic is affecting every club’s financial situation. The Red Devils have made it clear they won’t make any huge transfers this summer, but a move for van de Beek does seem likely since he won’t cost a lot. Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain so it would be a great addition to add a versatile midfielder like van de Beek. However, it will be quite the transition for him going from the Eredivisie to the Premier League. If they decide to sign the youngster, they will need to be patient because it will take time for him to find his best in a much stronger league.
As for Real Madrid, it would be the wrong decision for van de Beek to go there. Too many bright talents have gone to the Bernabeu and fell off the map because of the competition and pressure that follows the club around.
Manchester United would be the best move for the Dutch international this summer.
Pick: Manchester United +110
