MLS Picks Week 7

Through six weeks, three teams remain undefeated (Cincinnati, LAFC and Minnesota), while three also remain without a win — all in the West, with the LA Galaxy, Sporting KC and Colorado all owning donuts in the win column.

SKC and the Rapids are the league’s lowest scoring teams with only two goals scored. Those two teams meet at 8:30 pm EST for anyone interested.

Let’s dive into our top three MLS predictions here.

New England Revolution vs CF Montreal Prediction

Montreal sits at the foot of the Eastern Conference with only three points with one win in five games. They join four other teams from the West who are still also on three points. If not for RSL’s -10 goal differential, Montreal would sit at the bottom of the overall standings, with a -9 differential. Only Colorado and SKC have scored fewer goals (2) than Montreal’s three.

Montreal also only holds an advantage in the league over RSL when it comes to a 28th-ranked xG, while they are dead-last in xGA (29th). We can take this even further and see Montreal is 28th in shots and shots on target. While they’ve giving up plenty of shots themselves ranking tied-28th in shots allowed and tied-26th in shots allowed on target.

Bruce Arena’s New England Revolution may not be dominating anyone right now, but they are 4-1-1 (8GF/6GA) and at home they’re still undefeated at 2-1-0 (5GF/1GA).

Dating back into last season the Revs have lost just one in eight games. They’ve also been strong at Gillette Stadium going 8-7-2 (WDL) in their past 17 home games. The Revs have one of the best keepers in the league in Dorde Petrovic, one of the top number 10s in Carles Gil and top striker Gustavo Bou has two goals in his past three games. Meanwhile, Montreal still looks disorganized after losing key players and their coach Wilfred Nancy in the offseason.

  • MLS Picks: New England win (-110), risk 1 unit at DraftKings Sportsbook

Seattle Sounders vs St. Louis City SC Prediction

It took six weeks but the freight train that was St. Louis City was finally brought to a halt as they suffered their first defeat in franchise history, losing 1-0 at home to Minnesota United.

It was their first loss, the first time they didn’t score, the first of their matches to go under the 2.5 goal total and the first time they were forced to play with the ball and carry the possession. St. Louis had conceded possession in each of their previous five games and rank 26th in average possession at 44.5-percent. But against Minnesota, the team that holds the ball the least in MLS, Bradley Carnell’s team was forced to adjust their tactics possessing the ball 55-percent of the game.

It resulted in only three shots on target. Minnesota only had one shot themselves. but it was a penalty, scored by Luis Amarilla in the 78′ minute.

Against Seattle, they’ll likely be back in their comfort zone as the Sounders average 51.7 percent possession and will be unlikely to cede possession to City; though it could be a good strategy.

That should help. But Seattle will be a different challenge than what City are used to. Their five wins have come against Austin, Charlotte, Portland, San Jose and Real Salt Lake. Only Austin and RSL were playoff teams last season and RSL just squeeked in. Austin, while still expected to have a good season in 2023, have struggled out of the gate.

This will be the best team St Louis have faced and they’re meeting the Sounders in the midst of a great run of form for the Rave Green. Seattle is 4-1-1, scoring 12 goals while only conceding three. Jordan Morris is leading the Golden Boot race with eight goals, ahead of second place Joao Klauss (5) of St. Louis. Morris has been so good as a number 9 that it’s left head coach Brian Schmetzer scratching his head for ways to get star striker Raul Ruidiaz back on the pitch. It’s a good problem to have and I see Seattle causing too many problems for City this weekend to not walk away with the three points.

NYCFC vs Atlanta United Prediction

There have been 13 all-time meetings between these teams. In those meetings the home team is 7-4-2 (WDL). NYCFC won the last meeting last season on the road 2-1. The teams also drew 2-2 in New York. The other road win was by Atlanta way back in 2018.

A bet on  both teams to score has hit in 10/13 of these games. Naturally, that means there have been very few clean sheets, but NYCFC has actually scored in 12/13 all-time games with Atlanta.

The Pigeons’ offense hasn’t been overly impressive in 2023, scoring just six goals in six games, while the team is 2-2-2. But it’s rare for NYCFC to not find the back of the net when playing in New York, as it’s something they’ve done in each of their past 14 home games and also in 22/24. NYCFC has only played two home games so far this sason but they’ve won both 1-0 and 3-2.

But we’ve gone too long without touching on Atlanta here. They’re the league’s third-highest scoring team with 13 goals and are 4-1-1, second in the East. They have allowed nine goals, but six of those came on the road in Columbus during the international break when they were missing tons of key players.

Atlanta did shut out Charlotte on the road this season (3-0) and do have two clean sheets in their past four road games dating back into last season. But it’s still a rarity, as Atlanta has conceded a goal 14/17 of their recent road matches.

Playing on their odd setup at Yankee Stadium, NYC should be good enough to grab a goal, but you have to expect Atlanta to score themselves with the likes of Thiago Almada (4 goals), Caleb Wiley (3), Luiz Araujo (2) and Georgios Giakoumakis (2) all in good form.

  • MLS Picks: NYCFC vs Atlanta both teams to score (-134); risk 1 unit at Bet365
