Poor Start for Monaco

After securing a spot in the Europa League with a third-place finish last term, Monaco is off to a dismal start to the 2021/22 Ligue 1 campaign. Niko Kovac’s side currently sits in 14th place with a 1-1-2 record. They went winless through their first three games with a draw and two defeats but finally collected a much-needed victory on Matchday 4 against top-flight newcomers Troyes by a 2-1 scoreline. Midfielder Sofiane Diop was terrific, netting a brace for Monaco.

Scoring goals has been a problem for The Monégasques thus far, however, finding the back of the net just three times in four matches while conceding five goals. Wissam Ben Yedder, who was absolutely clinical with 20 goals to his name last term, has yet to get off the mark. The club’s two losses were very underwhelming considering they were against Lorient and Lens, who are both oppositions that shouldn’t be beating a club of Monaco’s stature.

But, it’s still early and Kovac’s men have a huge opportunity to get back on the right foot this weekend. It will not be easy though, especially with Marseille firing on all cylinders through their first handful of games. While Monaco did manage to defeat their Matchday 5 counterparts in their last clash, the hosts have tasted defeat on home turf to Marseille more than any other Ligue 1 opponent.

Marseille is Clicking

Several key signings were brought in this summer by Marseille, with the likes of William Saliba, Cengiz Under, and Matteo Guendouzi all joining the club from Arsenal and Roma, respectively. They’ve started every single fixture thus far for Jorge Sampaoli’s squad and have played a massive part.

Under has been a breath of fresh air in the final third, scoring three times already and giving Marseille another attacking threat alongside Dimitri Payet, who has also bagged three goals. While the side was involved in a horrific brawl with fans on Matchday 3 against Nice which resulted in the game being suspended, it’s been mostly positive results for the Olympians.

They’re currently fourth in the Ligue 1 table with a 2-1-0 record and have had absolutely no problems finding the back of the net, scoring eight times in three matches. Their backline hasn’t been very solid though, allowing five goals. Marseille’s most recent fixture was a 3-1 victory over Saint Etienne before the international break, with Guendouzi notching his first goal for the club while Gerson and Under both found their way onto the scoresheet.

Although Marseille finished in fifth place last term, they still find themselves with a spot in the group stages of Europa, which begins next week against Lokomotiv Moscow. While Sampaoli’s group is a treat to watch from an attacking standpoint, defensively, Les Phocéens needs to sharpen it up, having conceded at least once in each of their last 10 games. Monaco might not be scoring a lot of goals quite yet, but the likes of Ben Yedder and Diop are more than capable of doing damage if given the slightest bit of space.

Monaco vs Marseille Prediction

This is one of the most decorated rivalries in Ligue 1 football and it’s never short of entertainment. Both of these sides are in much different form right now though and although Monaco is clearly better than they’re currently playing, Marseille’s record at the Stade Louis II is hard to look past. Take the visitors to secure the three points, with the “Over” in goals being hit for the fourth-straight time.
