Champions League football is officially back and Wednesday brings an intriguing Group A clash as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool head to Italy for an encounter with Napoli. The kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM ET at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
The Reds of course lost in the final last season to Real Madrid in Paris and will be looking to make another deep run in this year’s competition. Napoli meanwhile, returns to the Champions League for the first time since 2019-20.

The Reds are favored at -103 odds on the moneyline and were actually paired in the same group as Napoli in back-to-back seasons from 2018-2020. However, the Italians hold the upper hand in head-to-head meetings, going 2-1-1.

The over 2.5 goals sit at -160 odds, while the under is at +130. Three of the four encounters between the two sides have cashed in on the under, which means this could offer tremendous value again, especially at plus odds.
Napoli vs Liverpool Champions League Preview
The Italian side secured a third-place finish last term, solidifying their spot back in the UCL. They’re off to a solid start this season too, going unbeaten in five games and currently sitting in second place with 11 points from a possible 15. Saturday was a massive victory for Luciano Spalletti’s side, beating Lazio 2-1.

After going down a goal within the first five minutes, Napoli bounced back with an equalizer just before the halftime whistle courtesy of Kim Min-Jae. It took just 16 minutes into the second period to find a winner as Georgian striker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia clinically fired home a smashing strike.
Napoli competed in Europa in 2021-22, ultimately bowing up in the round of 16 at the hands of Barcelona. With an impressive record against Liverpool, they’ll have no shortage of confidence heading into Wednesday.

Liverpool certainly would’ve envisioned themselves towards the top of the Premier League table after a month of action. But, that’s simply not the case. Klopp’s group is currently in seventh with a 2-3-1 record and with the exception of a ridiculous 9-0 routing of Bournemouth, the Reds have looked poor.

Saturday was another forgettable showing, playing to a scoreless draw with Everton in the Merseyside Derby. Injuries are taking their toll on Liverpool, but on a more positive note, Thiago is expected to be available for this UCL match after missing a month with a hamstring issue. That’s a massive boost for the Reds midfield. If he plays, it’ll likely be as a substitute.

Despite the dismal start in England, Klopp and his men know what they’re capable of in Europe after making the final in May for the third time in just five years. While it ended in disappointment, Liverpool will be feeling confident they can top this group consisting of Napoli, Ajax, and Rangers. After all, the sportsbooks have belief in the EPL giants with +550 Champions League odds.

Napoli vs Liverpool Pick
The Reds do not exactly have a great history against Napoli and injuries continue to hamper the squad. The hosts are in fine form and definitely have what it takes to pull off a crucial Matchday 1 victory. But, I’m liking the value in a draw here. The Group A counterparts will share the points.
Pick: Draw +275
