  • The draw for the group stages of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League has just been made
  • Man City opens as favorites to win the competition, just ahead of Liverpool and PSG
  • We preview the draw, analyze each  group and offer some picks below

The draw for the group stages of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League took place earlier in Istanbul. Europe’s elite teams know who they will be facing as they battle to make it beyond the group stages and into the knockout phase of the competition.

Champions League Odds and Predictions

Manchester City opens as favorites to win the competition but not far behind are Liverpool, PSG, and Bayern Munich – all of whom have the capability of lifting the trophy. Last season’s winners, Real Madrid, and their big rivals in Spain, Barcelona, are listed at fifth and sixth in the betting.

City’s draw, having been grouped with BVB, Sevilla and FC Copenhagen, has done nothing to affect their odds of winning this tournament outright.

We list the Champions League odds for each group, offer some analysis, and predict a winner and a qualifier for each of the eight groups.

Liverpool’s recent record in this competition has been good – winners in 2018-19 and runners-up last season – and even their slow start to the domestic season shouldn’t stop them from qualifying from this group with some ease.

But it’s an intriguing battle to see who will join them and, while Rangers are generously priced at +4700 to win the group, they are capable of making the battle for second a three-way contest.

Ajax and Napoli will both fancy their chances of qualification but Ajax, in particular, has the quality to go deep in this tournament.

Picks: To win Group A – Liverpool (-500) / To also qualify – Ajax

UCL Group B Odds

Team Moneyline
Atletico Madrid -118
Bayer Leverkusen +250
FC Porto +325
Club Brugge +2500

Atleti look well placed to prove the bookies right here – Diego Simeone is a past master at preparing teams for this competition – but Leverkusen and Porto both have the capability to push them hard.

Brugge is a long price for a reason and, while they may take a scalp or two along the way, realistically third place – which brings with it a Europa League place – would be a decent outcome for them.

In terms of qualification, Porto’s experience in this tournament may be a key factor.

Picks: To win Group B – Atletico Madrid (-118) / To also qualify – FC Porto

UCL Group C Odds

Team Moneyline
Bayern Munich -240
Barcelona +225
Inter Milan +1000
Viktoria Plzen +10000

Two of the biggest names in Europe clash in Group C but this is not a classic Barca team. Off-field issues have affected the Catalans badly and +240 for them to win the group offers little by way of value.

On the flip side. Inter are very generously priced at +1000, although second place behind Bayern may be a more realistic aim.

Czech champions, Viktoria Plzen have done superbly well to make it to the tournament proper for the first time ever and will enjoy the experience but it’s hard to see them making too much of an impression.

Picks: To win Group C – Bayern (-200) / To also qualify – Inter Milan

UCL Group D Odds

Team Moneyline
Tottenham Hotspur -250
Eintracht Frankfurt +650
Sporting Lisbon +650
Marseille +800

Spurs have made a good start to their domestic campaign but have yet to prove themselves on the European stage under Antonio Conte. While the draw has been relatively kind to them, this group looks wide open and has the makings of a four-way battle.

At +800 to win the group, the value here is with a rejuvenated Marseille who came runners-up in last season’s Ligue 1.

The first two rounds of fixtures in this group are crucial in terms of who qualifies and there could be some surprises.

Picks: To win Group D – Marseille (+800) / To also qualify – Eintracht Frankfurt

UCL Group E Odds

Team Moneyline
Chelsea -335
AC Milan +325
RB Salzburg +1000
Dinamo Zagreb +10000

The two favorites look well placed to get the job done here, although Chelsea’s difficult summer in the transfer market has left them a little short of striking options. AC Milan, Serie A champions of 2021-22, will be looking to go deep in this tournament and will push the Blues hard for that top spot.

RB Salzburg looks well placed for third spot and a place in the Europa League, while the Croatian champions, Dinamo Zagreb have exceeded expectations to qualify for the group stages.

Picks: To win Group E – AC Milan (+335) / To also qualify – Chelsea

UCL Group F Odds

Team Moneyline
Real Madrid -670
RB Leipzig +400
Celtic +5000
Shakhtar Donetsk +7500

The reigning champions have been drawn in a favorable group – one that looks like a two-horse race to see who claims the first spot. Real’s win over Liverpool in last season’s final was against the odds, but they have recruited well and appear capable of going deep in this tournament again.

The Germans from Leipzig only managed a third place in Group A last season but will be disappointed not to go at least one better this season, with Celtic and Donetsk looking likely to be battling it out for the third place.

Picks: To win Group F – Real Madrid (-670) / To also qualify – RB Leipzig

UCL Group G Odds

Team Moneyline
Manchester City -1250
Borussia Dortmund +1000
Sevilla +1300
FC Copenhagen +10000

Man City, the tournament favorites, will be happy with this draw, although BVB and Sevilla are two very capable teams who can cause upsets. The group is City’s for the taking though and it does appear a two-way struggle for second with Copenhagen there for the experience and a shot at third.

Sevilla are past masters at the Europa League – winners no less than six times – and will look to use this experience to give the Champions League a real crack.

Picks: To win Group G – Man City  (-1250) / To also qualify – Sevilla

UCL Group H Odds

Team Moneyline
Paris Saint-Germain -715
Juventus +700
Benfica +1100
Maccabi Haifa +10000

PSG looks almost untouchable in this group and will be looking to go all the way this season after crashing out to Real Madrid in the round-of-16 in 2021-22. Given the investment their Qatari owners have put into this PSG team, they need to deliver sooner rather than later.

Maccabi Haifa has done exceptionally well to qualify but it looks to be between Juve and Benfica for that second spot. With Juve a shadow of their former selves, Benfica looks capable of making it to the knockout phase.

Picks: To win Group H – PSG  (-715) / To also qualify – Benfica
