  • PSG have already won Group A, having built up a five-point lead at the summit
  • Galatasaray are trying to finish in third to secure Europa League soccer, currently sitting one point back of Club Brugge
  • Paris won the first meeting between the clubs, securing a 1-0 victory in Istanbul on Matchday 2

Thanks to four wins and a draw so far, Paris Saint-Germain have already secured themselves a spot in the knockout rounds as Group A winners. So there will be little to play for Thomas Tuchel’s side, other than simply trying to avoid injury.

The Turkish champions have no such luxury, however. Currently occupying fourth place in Group A, the Istanbul-based club needs a win to have any hope of securing third place and the Europa League campaign that accompanies it.

PSG on Easy Street

With nothing on the line other than simply showing up to play, Paris Saint-Germain will have one of their easiest assignments of the season on Wednesday.

PSG have won both previous home matches against Galatasaray, most recently in the 2000-01 Champions League group stage, so the French champions have history on their side as well. In fact, in four all-time home games against Turkish opposition, PSG have won three and drawn one, which happened in a goalless draw with Kayserispor in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup.

Paris on a Roll

In addition to winning their first four group stage games, before a 2-2 draw at Real Madrid on Matchday 5, Paris has shown itself to be a dangerous club. The two goals it conceded at the Bernabeu were the first two goals it had given up this entire Champions League campaign.

On top of that, the offense has been rolling, too, having scored in 29 consecutive Champions League games, which has had a direct effect on the team’s results, with Paris winning eight of its last 11 games.

That dominance has extended to its domestic form as well, where the reigning French champions currently sit on top of Ligue 1 with 36 points, five more than second-place Marseille and with a game in hand too. In addition, the team has scored 32 goals and conceded just eight in 15 games.

State of Desperation

While PSG may well be taking things easy on Wednesday, Galatasaray can ill afford to if they want to extend their European soccer season. Only a win will keep Fatih Terim’s team in with a shout of third place and the accompanying Europa League spot. In addition, the Turkish champions will need to rely on Club Brugge coming unstuck at home against Real Madrid. A win would lock up third for the Belgian club.

However, Galatasaray have struggled offensively during this season’s Champions League, having just scored once in five games, the lowest output in the tournament.

In a Tailspin

Galatasaray haven’t fared well of late in European competition. They kicked off last season’s group stages with a 3-0 defeat of Lokomotiv Moscow, but that victory is their lone success in their last 20 European contests.

And things haven’t exactly gone well away from Istanbul either. A 0-0 draw at Benfica in the Europa League round-of-16 last season ended a run of seven straight road losses, while the team has failed to score in eight of its last 10 European away matches. And things are no better in the Champions League either, with the team failing to score in six away matches in the competition.

Things are about the same domestically this season as well for the Turkish champions, currently sitting eighth in the Turkish league, seven points behind leaders Sivasspor.
