Spain embarks on the pursuit of their third title victory in the last four editions of this tournament when they open their Euro 2020 group stage schedule on Monday against Sweden as heavy -310 favorites.
Spain enjoyed a sensational run in Euro qualifying, going undefeated in 10 matches, and taking home four points in a pair of clashes with Sweden. Listed as lengthy +800 underdogs in their Group E opener, Sweden have surrendered just one total goal during their current five-match win streak in all competitions.
However, the Blue and Yellow have plenty of work to do to reverse their dismal record in this tournament since reaching the semi-finals in their first-ever appearance, back in 1992.
Here’s a look at all the odds and trends ahead of this key Group E matchup on Monday at 3:00pm ET at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville, Spain.

Spain Eager to Atone for Early Exits
Spain aims to extend their recent dominance over Sweden when they hit the pitch for Monday’s group stage opener. La Roja have outgunned the Swedes by a 9-2 overall margin while compiling a 3-1-0 win-draw-loss record in four meetings since 2006.
Overall, Spain sports a 5-1-1 all-time record in non-friendly competition with Sweden. That bodes for Spain, who have suffered just one loss in their past 10 tournament-opening matches at the Euro.
Spain have been a flop at major tournaments since their 2012 Euro win but La Roja are the only team to win back-to-back European Championships.

This edition of the club is motivated by a desire to atone for a stunning early exit from this event back in 2016, when Spain were bounced from the Euro with a Round of 16 loss to Italy. Their struggles on the international stage continued at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where they posted just one victory before meekly bowing out in the Round of 16.
COVID Outbreak an Unwelcome Distraction
Overall, Spain has posted just four total wins over their past three major international tournament appearances, marking a dramatic reversal in fortune after racking up a combined 15-3-1 record while claiming championship victories at the Euro in 2008 and 2012, and at the 2010 World Cup.

Health concerns have also emerged after two players tested positive for COVID-19 last week, including team captain Sergio Busquets. The outbreak spurred team management to send home all 17 players they had called up as an alternate squad, and to quickly implement a plan to vaccinate all Spanish players competing at the tournament.

Sweden Struggling vs Top-Flight Opponents
Sweden will be hoping to capitalize on the distractions caused by this past week’s COVID-19 scare, as they seek to maintain the momentum that has enabled them to avoid defeat so far in 2021. The Blue and Yellow had little difficulty disposing of Finland and Armenia in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies, but have struggled badly at times in non-friendly action since the end of Euro qualifying.

Sweden has stumbled to a disappointing 3-0-5 win-draw-loss record in their past eight meaningful contests, with two of those wins coming against lightweights Georgia and Kosovo.
Indeed, the Swedes have wilted in recent dates with top-flight opponents, getting outscored by a 13-5 margin during a 1-0-5 run in UEFA Nations League action against reigning World champions France, World Cup runners up Croatia, and defending European champions Portugal.
Can Sweden Succeed without Zlatan?
Adding to concerns in the Swedish camp is the squad’s dismal track record at the Euro. Sweden has failed to advance past the group stage in four of their past five tournament appearances, going 3-5-8 in 16 matches during that stretch. Things have not been helped by the absence of veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The 39-year-old has been a fixture for Sweden on the international stage for two decades, and enjoyed a solid campaign with Milan this season, potting 15 goals in 19 matches. However, he was left off the squad after suffering a knee injury last month.

Zlatan’s absence adds to the burden on Emil Forsberg and Alexander Isak to generate offense. Isak is coming off a breakthrough campaign at Real Sociedad, where he potted 17 goals in 34 appearances this season. Forsberg remained a steady midfield presence for RB Leipzig, scoring seven times and adding four helpers.
The Picks: Spain -1 (+110); OVER 2.5 (-128)
