Inconsistent Spurs
After suffering back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Vitesse and West Ham, Tottenham returned to winning ways in midweek when they beat Burnley away in the Carabao Cup. It was a much-needed win for Spurs and their manager Nuno Espirito Santo, whose first few months in charge have been difficult due to his team’s inconsistency. A win here against United would go a long way to placating a Tottenham fanbase who have yet to fully buy into the Nuno project.

Despite currently sitting in sixth, Tottenham has already lost four of their nine games but five wins and no draws have still left them in a position to challenge for the European places. As a result of their 15-point haul, they are just two points behind fourth-placed West Ham and a point and one place ahead of Saturday’s opponents.
The Kane Saga Effect
One of the big surprises so far has been the lack of goals from Tottenham, with Espirito Santo’s team only managing nine goals. The biggest cause of this is that their usual, most reliable source of goals, England captain Harry Kane, has scored just once following an unsettled pre-season, during which he tried and failed to engineer a move to Manchester City.

Worth noting is that Spurs’ record against Manchester United is not a great one – having won just one of their last five EPL meetings – and their most recent match in north London ended in a 3-1 victory for the Red Devils.

Traumatic Week for United
For Manchester United, it has been a traumatic week both on and off the pitch. Their 5-0 defeat last Sunday by their bitterest rivals, Liverpool, was a hard one to take and led to lots of questions being asked of the long-term suitability of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. In the short-term at least, it looks as if the Norwegian has ridden out the storm and will be in the dugout on Saturday but this all adds up to a massive sliding doors moment for him.

With such an expensively assembled squad at his disposal, Solskjaer is expected to be challenging Man City and Liverpool for the title but Sunday’s result was the most obvious indicator yet that United is still way off reaching that level. Individually, player-for-player, United has a squad that looks as if it should be competitive at the highest level, but they are simply not delivering and United’s owners are rapidly running out of patience.
Pressure on Solskjaer
Solkjaer will point to United’s UEFA Champions League group, of which they are currently top, but their performance level in that competition has not matched their results, and they head into Saturday’s game having lost three of their last four EPL games, earning just a single point along the way.

What may be in United’s favor is that this game is away from home. Old Trafford was an intimidating, restless arena last Sunday as United struggled and it may suit Solskjaer’s men to be free of that particular pressure. They also have some good away form in the Premier League to fall back on, having won 36 of their last 58 EPL games, losing just 10.
Tottenham vs Manchester United Prediction
The need for a United win here is huge, arguably even greater than Tottenham’s, and the fact the Red Devils are playing away from home is a definite advantage on this occasion. For Spurs, much will depend on the form of Kane, who must surely start hitting the net soon, but a response from United is what I am expecting, and while they remain in plus money that’s where the value lies.
Pick: Manchester United to win (+140)
