Manchester United is currently in shambles after a shocking 5-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford. The poor results continue to pile up for the club, which means manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is at risk of losing his job.

The Norwegian made it clear following the loss that he won’t resign and will continue to work at turning things around. However, the Red Devils could choose to sack him very soon. With that in mind, former Inter boss Antonio Conte and ex-Real Madrid gaffer Zinedine Zidane have emerged as the favorites to take Solksjaer’s place.

Is it Time For Solskjaer to Move On?

Solskjaer hasn’t exactly had the best tenure at Manchester United since taking over for Jose Mourinho in December of 2018. They’ve failed to win any silverware under his guidance and currently sit seventh in the Premier League table with 14 points. To put that into perspective, United is a full eight points behind league leaders Chelsea.

Despite signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane this past summer, it hasn’t really made a huge difference. While the club did show relatively well to start the campaign, it’s been downhill ever since. The Red Devils have collected only two victories in their last seven games, with four of them ending in defeat. Even mid-week against Atalanta, it took a heroic comeback to secure a 3-2 win after a dreadful first half.

The problems go much further than just Solskjaer. The lack of communication and vulnerability at the back and in the middle of the pitch has been evident, especially in Sunday’s humiliating result. But, unfortunately, the blame will always go on the gaffer. Man United has hit rock bottom and frankly, there seems to be no other choice at this point but to make a change in the dugout. The stature and expectations of this club are far too high to keep struggling.

Conte, Zidane Leading Candidates

Conte brings boatloads of experience to the table, having led Inter Milan to their first Scudetto in a decade in 2020-21. His hard-nosed style of coaching was an immediate hit at the San Siro, but he ultimately decided to part ways last summer. It’s certainly not a surprise he has the best odds for the United job. The Italian has already coached in England before with Chelsea from 2016-18 and even led them to a Premier League title. He knows what it’s like to manage at big clubs, also serving as the gaffer at Juve for three seasons, where he won Serie A in each and every year.

Zidane might not have the same amount of time coaching under his belt as Conte, but being in the dugout at Real Madrid is no easy task. The pressure is always high at a European giant like Los Blancos. The amount of hardware he collected while in charge in the Spanish capital is impressive in itself, though. The Frenchman won three straight Champions League titles, two Super Cups, and a pair of La Liga trophies in a four-year tenure between two separate stints. His familiarity with Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane would surely come in handy at Old Trafford as well.

The Manchester United hierarchy has always shown faith in Solskjaer. There’s a chance they give him a bit more time to turn the ship around, but ultimately, it really seems like he isn’t holding his players accountable. A club like this simply can’t endure these struggles much longer, which is why I believe he will be sacked in the near future.

That being said, Conte seems like the most logical option. He’s a seasoned manager across Europe and knows exactly what it takes to succeed. Also, the side needs a gritty coach like the Italian. It would be a good fit.

Pick: Antonio Conte +125
