Wales and England meet in their final Group B clashes of the 2022 World Cup on Tuesday evening with everything on the line. The Dragons know that only a win will give them a chance of progressing and as for England, they will be looking to take all three points in a bid to top the group.

Wales vs England Preview

After an underwhelming showing against the United States I would not be surprised if Gareth Southgate decided to freshen things up coming into this match. The country is crying out to see Phil Foden and I think Gareth might give the Manchester City youngster his first taste of World Cup action. The Three Lions lacked creativity in midfield and never looked like opening up the Yanks. Harry Kane’s form is a little concerning, he just doesn’t look fully match fit so again Southgate needs to look at how we get the best out of our captain in this tournament. Substitutions can win games and I feel this has been an area where the manager can be criticized.

I feel it takes us too long to make changes and I often feel myself scratching my head with the choice of personnel off the bench, especially when we are chasing games. I still can’t understand how when we need a win to progress we switch Bellingham for Henderson, when we have the likes of Foden on the bench. Harry Kane and Mason Mount for me didn’t warrant a full 90 minutes either and I would like to have seen Wilson given a run out. We only used three of our five substitutions and I think we would have benefited from some fresh legs in the latter stages of the game.

Wales Outlook

As for Wales they have had a really disappointing tournament with only one good half to really shout about against the USA. They put in a shocker of a performance against Iran and as it stands they are likely to be exiting the World Cup in the Group stages unless they take a win against England and USA can’t beat Iran. Unfortunately, recent encounters against England don’t make for pretty reading for Wales having lost all of their previous six meetings, the last of which was a 3-0 friendly defeat in October 2020.

Rob Page will be hoping that star players Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey can bow out in style in what is likely to be both of their first and last World Cups. We have yet to see Bale and Ramsey hit the heights we have come to expect of them over the years but it would be fitting if they could produce something on the biggest stage of all, the least they deserve having been the linchpins for their country over the last 10/15 years.

Wales vs England Predictions

John Stones has had an encouraging tournament so far and has looked very composed at the back. He has completed more passes than any player in an England shirt with 202 completed passes from 206 attempted, an impressive 98.1% pass completion rate. I expect England to have the lion’s share of the possession again in this match and I think there is great value in John Stones to attempt 90+ passes at 5/2 odds.

Alongside him, there is a strong argument to suggest that Harry Maguire has been England’s standout performer in the World Cup so far. He has put his body on the line and has not let club form and large amounts of criticism leading into the tournament affect him. He has had his head on everything for the Three Lions in our first two games and with England likely to have plenty of set-pieces in this match I think 11/4 for Maguire to have a headed shot on target offers value.

Neco Williams Cards Odds

If England plays to the levels we know they are capable of and showed in the game against Iran then Wales could be overloaded. The Welsh have looked leggy in their first two outings and I think England will look to overload the flanks. England hasn’t played too much through the middle so I think it is likely that Neco Williams could be doubled up on for large sections of the match. With that in mind, I am backing the youngster to commit 2+ fouls in the match priced at 9/5 odds at online sportsbooks.

Wales vs England Correct Score Pick

And finally, my correct score prediction is paying 10/1 again. England has won all of their last six matches against Wales and I think they are on course for another victory here. I hope we are in for a classic encounter with both teams getting on the scoresheet but ultimately backing England to take a 3-1 win here and top the group.

Wales vs England Team News

Wales will be without first-choice goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey who misses out through suspension. Midfielder Joe Allen came off the bench against Iran to make his first appearance of the tournament as he returns from injury.

England full-back Kyle Walker came off the bench against USA to get his first 2022 World Cup minutes under his belt, but it is expected that Southgate will stick with Trippier at right-back and not risk Walker. James Maddison could be in line to make his first appearance although if he is to do so I expect it will be off the bench as he comes back from injury. The name on every fan’s lips is Phill Foden so I would expect to see the talented Man City starlet feature somewhere in the starting eleven.

Wales vs England Match stats

  • England have won their last six meetings with Wales
  • Harry Kane won the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot and is without a goal this campaign.
  • John Stones has a 98.1% pass completion rate and has completed 202 passes in England’s first two games.
  • Wales have not beaten England since 1984.
  • A win would confirm England as Group B winners.
