After a 6-2 thrashing at the hands of England in their first match, the Iranians bounced back against the Welsh and took advantage of a foolish decision from Hennessey to come out of his box and ruthlessly tackle Porto star Mehdi Taremi in the 86th minute.
Carlos Quieroz’s men found their breakthrough just minutes before injury time was up when defender Rouzbeh Cheshmi fired home a beautiful strike from outside of the box. Shortly after, Ramin Rezaeian sealed the deal with a second. That win should undoubtedly give Iran some much-needed confidence for this USA game and to know their nation has never lost to the Americans will also be in the back of the minds.

A draw with a top-notch England side in terms of quality is by no means a bad thing, but the States would’ve loved the three points. To be brutally honest though, they’ve truly lacked any serious threat up top in Qatar. Aside from the one moment of brilliance from Timothy Weah against Wales, Gregg Berhalter’s team hasn’t looked good in the final third. The Americans are registering just one shot on target per game and don’t exactly possess a true finisher.
The England match was a perfect example. The US registered 10 total attempts, but only one found the goal. On a more positive note though, the Americans proved this is a young, energetic group full of quality and pizzazz, outplaying one of the better teams in the world. It simply comes down to finding that end product. There is no better time to do so than Tuesday. Their World Cup dreams depend on it.
