Here are some more notes on NFL win totals movement:

  • [October 12] The Steelers win total continues to plummet after Kenny Pickett’s first start resulted in a blowout loss to the Bills. Pittsburgh’s win total was 7.5 after Week 1, but is now down at 4.5, the second-lowest in the NFL.
  • [September 27] The Eagles’ NFL win total continues to rise as it’s now at 12.5, which is tied for the league-high with the Bills. The Patriots’ win total has been taken off the board for now as we await more firm news on the severity of Mac Jones’ ankle injury.
  • [September 20] After the first two weeks of the 2022 NFL season, the Bills and Buccaneers are still out in front of the rest with win totals of 12.5 and 12, respectively. The Eagles win total has seen the most positive movement, now landing at 11.5 after opening at 8.5. The Bengals’ win total has dropped the most, going from 10 to 8.5.
  • [August 18] The Browns’ win total has finally reopened after the league has announced an 11-game suspension for QB Deshaun Watson. Cleveland’s win total is set at 8.5 with Jacoby Brissett expected under center for Week 1.
  • [March 27] NFL win totals have opened for the 2022-23 NFL season. The only team who was left off the board is the Cleveland Browns, who traded for Deshaun Watson. The former Texans QB could still be suspended by the league for the sexual misconduct allegations he is facing. Ten teams have opened with double-digit win totals, while six teams have opened with over/unders of six or less.

How to Read NFL Win Total Odds

If this is your first time looking at NFL win totals, the numbers above might be incomprehensible. The easiest way to read win totals is in the table format, where the first column lists the teams, the second column lists the win total itself, the third column lists the over odds, and the fourth column lists the under odds.

It’s easiest to understand using examples. Let’s say you want to bet on the Arizona Cardinals, the first team on the list. Looking at the second column, you can see their win total has been set at 8.5. If they win 9 or more games, they have hit the over. If they win 8 or fewer games, they have hit the under. The odds in columns three and four determine the payout for over bettors and under bettors, respectively.

If you wager $100 on Arizona to go over 8.5 at -125 odds, you will profit $80 if they win 9 or more games. If you wager $100 on Arizona to go under 8.5 at +103 odds, you  will profit $103 if they stay under 8.5 wins.

How to Bet on NFL Win Totals

Once you have found the wager you would like to make, betting on NFL win totals is as simple as placing any other type of bet. Find the NFL win-totals section at your sportsbook of choice and click on the over or under. Be warned, though, that different sportsbooks list the over/under options in different orders.

FanDuel Sportsbook, for example, always lists the over first, whereas DraftKings Sportsbook always lists the option with shorter odds first. So for teams like the 49ers and Buccaneers, the left-hand column is the under and the right-hand column is the over.

Make sure you read the betting options carefully and double-check your bet slip before submitting your wager.

The average wins for each team over the last three seasons above is a very flawed metric right now. Last season (2021-22) was a 17-game regular season, whereas the previous two were only 16-game regular seasons. We have left it in the table above to try and give you a bit of a glimpse into each team’s successes/struggles over the last few years.

NFL Win Totals Betting Tips

Before you do start making any bets, it’s important to note that there are 272 possible wins available in a 17-game season, but sportsbooks often go over that number in their opening win totals.

This year, Barstool Sportsbook has opened with a sum of 264 wins, but that excludes the Browns, who will likely be set at 10.5 when they open. This would put the sum at 274.5, which is 2.5 more wins than possible.
