  • Arguably the biggest clash of Matchday 33 in the Premier League will see West Ham host Chelsea at the London Stadium

With Manchester City 11 points clear at the top of the table, the title basically has their name written all over it. However, the fight for the last two berths in next year’s Champions League campaign is very much up for grabs.

Chelsea and West Ham are currently level on 55 points apiece, with the Blues holding the fourth and final placing on goal difference currently. Therefore, Saturday’s Matchday 33 clash at London Stadium, kick-off at 12:30 PM EST, will have major implications for a spot in Europe’s most prized competition.

Chelsea had the upper hand in the first meeting of the term between these two sides in December of 2020, blanking the Hammers by three goals at Stamford Bridge.

Crunch Time for West Ham

David Moyes’ side was actually handed one of the more workable schedules to end the season, but last weekend’s slip-up at Newcastle did not help their case for a top-four finish.

West Ham came out sloppy at the back, conceding two first-half goals in a span of just five minutes. But, they showed real character in the second period, bagging a brace just seven minutes apart, with Jesse Lingard equalizing from the spot. Unfortunately, the Hammers couldn’t hold on to the lone point though, allowing Joe Willock to net a winner in the 82nd minute.

Prior to the defeat, West Ham won back-to-back fixtures against Leicester City and Wolves by 3-2 scorelines. But, there has been a concerning trend for the squad. Their backline has been extremely vulnerable over the last four matches, conceding 10 times. On Matchday 29, the Hammers fired three goals past Arsenal then allowed them to claw back and equalize.

On a more positive note though, the attack has been phenomenal. Lingard has injected a real spark into West Ham since his arrival, bagging nine goals and tallying three assists in just 10 appearances. Tomas Soucek, Michail Antonio, and Jarrod Bowen have all played their part in the final third as well.

Moyes’ men have won three of their last five home games against Chelsea. The Hammers also haven’t tasted defeat at the London Stadium since December 31st, a span of five fixtures.

Tough Schedule Ahead for Blues

The quest for a spot in the Champions League for next season will definitely not be easy for Chelsea. As they prepare for their two-legged semifinal with Real Madrid next week, the main focus at hand will be getting a result against West Ham.

The Blues failed to take advantage of a very winnable match on Tuesday, playing to a scoreless draw versus Brighton. It was a very underwhelming performance for Thomas Tuchel’s side, registering just seven shots, with only four on target. They lacked any real threat up top, despite having 64-percent possession of the ball.

It won’t get any easier for Chelsea, either. After this Hammers clash, they face Fulham, City, Arsenal, Leicester, and Villa to round out the term. With two UCL fixtures nestled in between the next two matchdays, it’s going to be a grind for the Blues.

However, the West Londoners have lost just once in their last 13 league games and have allowed only 31 goals in 32 appearances this season. The backline will be tested on Saturday though with a Hammers attack looking to continue their torrid form.

This clash means a ton for both sides. West Ham is coming up against a defense that can actually stop them, but I figure they will be able to do some damage nonetheless.

Chelsea on the other hand is coming off a dreadful attacking display where they looked lifeless. The Blues will be ready to bounce back on Saturday and we know the Hammers can be vulnerable at the back.

But, I think you’ll see each team collect a point here. Also, expect no shortage of goals.
