Bouzkova’s road to the quarterfinals was helped with some other upsets along the way.

She got a good first-round draw against countrywoman Tereza Martincova. Then she defeated Camila Osorio, who had upset No. 15 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

In the third round, she took on Liudmila Samsonova (who had eliminated No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka), and came back from losing the first set 6-0 to win in three.

She clearly loves the place, Bouzkova made the final at the WTA 250 in the same venue back in February. She also is fluent in Spanish, which can only help the crowd get behind her.

Kalinskaya Shocker Win Over Kasatkina

Kalinskaya, who is six months younger than Bouzkova at 23, won’t soon forget the end of her impressive upset of countrywoman Daria Kasatkina late at night Thursday, in the third round.

As a caveat, Kasatkina learned that day that she would qualify for the WTA Finals.

But even if there was a natural letdown, she was no less focused on winning.

In the end, Kalinskaya said she thought the conditions, including the altitude, suited her hitting style.

This could also be said of Bouzkova, for whom this is the first tournament since the US Open.

Bouzkova the Favorite Over Kalinskaya

The two have only met once on Tour. But they did play in the quarterfinals of the 2014 US Open juniors. That one also was won by Bouzkova. Easily.

Kalinskaya was the seeded hotshot; Bouzkova was unseeded. But she won the whole thing without losing a set after toppling No. 2 seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round.

The 24-year-old Czech has had a slow but steady career arc, with plenty of heartbreakers along the way that, if won, might have sped up the process. But she reached her career high of No. 38 just last week.

Kalinskaya, who always got plenty of attention as a junior has also been a “slow-but-steady” player.

But her outward blasé attitude is in sharp contrast to Bouzkova’s body language, which screams, “I’m absolutely giving it everything I have,” on every single point.

Kalinskaya vs Bouzkova Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2020 Cincinnati (R64) Outdoor Hard 6-1, 7-5 Bouzkova

In the end, they are rather similar types of players, on the tennis side.

It remains to be seen whether Kalinskaya will be energized by that win over a top-10 player, and hungry for more.

What you know is that Bouzkova is always hungry. It might be unfair to judge on external body language, but Kalinskaya definitely finishes second on that front.

This win, though, might be a game-changer for her.

Kalinskaya vs Bouzkova Pick

You would expect long rallies in this one, and a lot of nerves, as well. It is a huge occasion for both, with Bouzkova having a few additional hours of rest as Kalinskaya finished up her win a couple of minutes before midnight.

It will come down to who handles the big moments with more serenity (a cliché, because it’s true).

You would also expect Bouzkova to have the crowd, because many of them will remember her fondly from the tournament last winter.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 Sets (+124)
