  • Neither Krejčíková nor Teichmann, both unseeded, has lost a set going into the Dubai semifinals
  • Krejčíková, an accomplished doubles player, is looking for her first career singles title
  • The Czech is the slight favorite; we break down why that’s likely to play out on court

The progression of 25-year-old Barbora Krejčíková as a singles player has been slow and steady.

And this effort at a “1000”-level WTA tournament is the best of her career so far.

She’s likely to be in the top 50 in the rankings next Monday, no matter what. And if she beats Jil Teichmann Friday, she’ll be ranked in the mid-30s.

Long Odds for Both Pre-Tournament

Neither player was among the top 20 in the early stages of the tournament odds.

And both had a lot of help along the way with opponents taking care of seeded players for them.

Svetlana Kuznetsova took out No. 1 seed Elina Svitolina, only to have Krejčíková defeat her in the next round.

And wild card Anastasia Potapova upset both No. 6 Belinda Bencic and No. 11 Madison Keys. But Krejčíková dismantled her 6-0, 6-2 in Thursday’s quarterfinal.

Teichmann benefited from an injury retirement in the second round by fellow lefty Petra Kvitova, who had won Doha the previous week. Teichmann never had to face any of the other three seeded players in her section of the 56-player draw.

In sharp contrast, the other Dubai semifinal between Garbiñe Muguruza and Elise Mertens features two in-form seeded players.

Teichmann Faces Coco Gauff Three Times in a Month

For Teichmann, one recurring theme in 2021 has been facing 16-year-old American teen sensation Coco Gauff too often, and too early.

The 23-year-old lefty played Gauff in the first round of the pre-Australian Open tournament, and lost in a third-set tiebreak.

They played each other again in the first round of the Australian Open a week later, and Gauff was an easy winner.

The two met again this week, in the quarterfinals. And this time Teichmann faced a teenager who’d had a lot of tough matches and had been away from home for several months. Teichmann made relatively quick work of her.

Krejčíková Lacks Lefty Experience

There are six lefties ranked in the top 75 on the WTA Tour, three of them her fellow Czechs.

But Krejčíková has only played one career match against all of them – combined. It was was against Teichmann, on red clay in Ostrava, Czech Republic last fall. And she won.

She’s 2-0 against southpaw Arantxa Rus (No. 80). But their last meeting was four years ago.

Krejčíková did play Italian lefty Martina Trevisan (who plays quite differently to Teichmann, in Doha last week and defeated her 7-5, 6-4.

But it’s not much. It could give the early match edge to Teichmann (+105 to win the first set).

The only lefty likely to still be around the site is doubles specialist Yifan Xu, who might be good to warm up with to get used to the lefty spin, but who doesn’t hit the ball nearly as hard as Teichmann does.

Previous Meeting Inconclusive

Krejčíková and Teichmann have met once before, last fall in Krejčíková’s homeland, in cool conditions and on red clay.

While the Czech’s career records on hard courts and clay are similar, Teichmann so far has been a superior player on the dirt. So it was an impressive victory.

Krejčíková

Krejcikova a Multiple Major Title Winner

If Krejčíková is only now coming along in singles, she has significantly more “big-match” experience than Teichmann does.

She and partner Katarina Siniaková won both the women’s doubles title at both French Open and Wimbledon in 2018.

And Krejčíková has won the Australian Open mixed doubles title, with two different partners, the last three years.

Prediction:  Krejčíková in two sets (+175)
