Alcaraz Trying to Hold onto No. 1

Alcaraz, still just 19, has two big prizes to shoot for this week.

He is trying to win the “Sunshine Double” – titles at both Indian Wells and Miami. The list of players that have accomplished this is small, and includes Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

As well, as the defending Miami Open champion with a narrow lead on Djokovic in the rankings, he needs to defend his title to keep the No. 1 spot.

Alcaraz All Over Fritz in Miami Quarterfinals

The teenager had the toughest draw of all the remaining favorites in the Miami quarterfinals, in No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz.

But if the American fans thought Fritz had a shot in the first meeting between the two, they were swiftly disabused of that notion as Alcaraz went on to a fairly routine 6-4, 6-2 win.

It took just one hour, 18 minutes; Alcaraz won 65 percent of his second serves; Fritz won just 38 percent of his own.

As Fritz pointed out, Alcaraz as all the tools.

And as a Spanish player in Miami, he’s also a rock star; the support from the fans on hand can him get over the line, even if his tennis alone is more than good enough on its own.

Sinner Trying to Break New Ground

It wasn’t long ago that Sinner was the one picked by pundits and fellow players to be the next big star. It’s been a bit more of a gradual road than expected.

He’s not as physically mature as Alcaraz despite being two years older. He is a far less complete player. But he is a sweet striker of the ball.

Both have blinding speed, which made their 2022 US Open quarterfinal one of the mose impressive watches in recent years.

Neither has lost a set this week; only one set of the 16 total sets they’ve contested has even gone to a tiebreak. So something will have to give.

Favorite Alcaraz in Great Form

The reasonably routine win by Alcaraz over Sinner at Indian Wells was somewhat of a disappointment after their epic matchup at the US Open last summer. But it wasn’t especially surprising.

Sinner’s only wins  came on other surfaces – on clay in Umag, and at Wimbledon on grass. Alcaraz leads their hard court head-to-head 3-0.

Of the three previous hard-court, Miami is probably most like the US Open, except hotter and even more humid. But Alcaraz also feels far more at home in Miami.

Alcaraz vs Sinner Prediction

You’d expect this Miami Open matchup to be closer than the one at Indian Wells, in part because Alcaraz probably can’t play that much better than he did in the desert, and Sinner can surely play a little better.

But the outcome is likely to be the same in the end for our Alcaraz vs Sinner prediction that sees a bet coming on the over for total games.
