Upset Queen Cirstea Having a Swing

Cirstea was 4-6 on the 2023 season when she arrived at Indian Wells four weeks ago.

She has since gone 9-1 and other than Indian Wells champion Elena Rybakina (who will meet the winner  in Saturday’s Miami Open women’s singles final) and Aryna Sabalenka, has been the most in-form player during the “Sunshine Swing”.

And the most surprising.

Her best win in the California desert weas a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over No. 5 seed Caroline Garcia, before losing to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals.

In Miami, Cirstea defeated Garcia again (even easier – 6-2, 6-3), and then talented Czechs Karolina Muchova and Marketa Vondrousova.

In Thursday’s quarterfinal, she upset a sub-par Sabalenka, who was far more affected by the heat and humidity than the Romanian.

Never a Heat Lover, Kvitova Makes first Miami Semi

For Kvitova, the heat and humidity have always been a challange. She’s asthmatic, and typically the endurance  runs out in those conditions.

The fairly quick Miami Open courts, in theory,  suit her well. And she had made the quarterfinals three previous times (including last year). But never the semifinals.

Kvitova, who turned 33 last month, has been having a fairly good year that has included two wins over world No. 3 Jessica Pegula.

And she’s had a good draw; No. 4 seed Jabeur and a resurgent Bianca Andreescu were out of the picture by the time she got to them.

In a quarterfinal delayed a day by rain, she defeated No. 18 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 Thursday to make the final four.

11th Edition of Kvitova vs Cirstea

These two are just a month apart and have been out there grinding for 15 years. Kvitova turned 33 earlier this month; Cirstea turns 33 next week.

Kvitova’s career high of No. 2 came all the way back in 2011. Cirstea’s best ranking of No. 21 came nearly a decade ago when she last made a big move at a WTA 1000 event, reaching the final in Toronto and beating Kvitova along the way.

They never met in the juniors, but first played all the way back in 2008. After a sparse period, they met twice in 2022, with Cirstea upsetting Kvitova in the first round of last year’s Australian Open She beat her in the second round in 2021 as well.

Kvitova vs Cirstea Prediction

There won’t be much sublety to this matchup; it will be a hard-hitting encounter between two players who smack the ball, but can be as prone to streaks of errors as streaks of brilliance.

If Kvitova were running out of gas, it might well have shown up against Alexandra on Thursday. In Cirstea’s favor is that she’s had an extra day of rest. It’s tough to point to fate or destiny as a factor, since both are on such great runs.

But it does feel as though if Kvitova is to win, it will have to be in straight sets.
