  • New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is on pace to clout 100 more homers than last season
  • Adam Wainwright is destined to be the next American Idol
  • Read on for these and other astonishing MLB Opening Day overreactions

In terms of MLB Opening-Day overreactions, what can New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge do for an encore? Well, how about if the American League home run king were to better last season’s record 62-homer campaign – by 100?

The first home run of the MLB season went to the man who broke the long-held record of Yankees outfielder Roger Maris. Maris clouted 61 homers in 1961. Judge slammed 62 balls out of the park last season.

Opening Day was also Judge’s day. He went deep again, and yes, that does mean he’s on pace to park 162 baseballs this season.

If you haven’t already wagered on Judge to repeat in the 2023 AL MVP  odds at +450, well, just what are you waiting for?

Well, it could be because you’re thinking there’s a lot more value in placing a bet on Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, or Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer as AL MVP candidates. They were both part of making MLB history on opening day, and by comparison, what Judge accomplished pales in comparison to their achievements.

Elsewhere in opening day overreactions, who likes Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom and his 12.27 ERA in the AL Cy Young Award odds? Or maybe you’re waiting to get a little action on Adam Wainwright’s American Idol betting line.

The Singing Cardinal

Okay, hands up all of you who played a prop bet on St Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright belting out the Star Spangled Banner on opening day at the ballpark? All that’s left to determine now is whether Wainwright, entering his final season of MLB play, will be taking his talents to American Idol, The Voice, or America’s Got Talent?

Come to think of it, Wainwright seems more like a Masked Singer kind of guy.

Wainwright’s song stylings were the launching point for a wild day at Busch Stadium as the Toronto Blue Jays outscored the Cardinals 10-9 in a showdown of last season’s MLB Wild Card failures. Springer mashed five hits and scored four runs to pace Toronto’s attack.

At that pace, Spring will finish with 810 hits, which (checks notes) would be a single-season record. Here’s a piece of betting advice on that total – take the under.

No Rut for Rutschman

The Baltimore Orioles were a different team after catching phenom Rutschman was promoted from the minor leagues. Baseball pundits are projecting a decline in fortunes for the Orioles following an 83-79 campaign but on opening day, Rutschman was having none of it.

He clubbed five hits, including a homer, as Baltimore won 10-9 on the road at Boston. On the subject of overreactions, yes the Red Sox were in a downturn last season. However, in the MLB public betting splits, the people were pounding the under on the total on opening day at Fenway Park. That’s why you fade the public.

Roughing Up deGrom

Imagine having a five-run lead against Jacob deGrom. Now, imagine having a five-run lead against deGrom and losing the game. The Philadelphia Phillies don’t need to imagine it. They were living it.

Up 5-0 on deGrom and the Texas Rangers and with Aaron Nola on the mound, the reigning National League champion Phillies lost 11-7. If you’re a Rangers fan, should you be overreacting to the fact that the oft-injured deGrom has now surrendered three or more earned runs in each of his last five starts?

Rest assured that Phillies fans won be overreacting to their favorite team blowing a 5-0 lead, or coughing up nine runs in an inning. Philly supporters are level-headed folks. They never get carried away.

Aaron It Out on Opening Day

Judge going deep in his first at-bat of the season was about as close to normal as things were going to get on opening day.

It was kind of like watching the Detroit Tigers get shutout 4-0 by the Tampa Bay Rays. There’s a soothing quality about things that never change.
