Muguruza on Rebound Following Dismal 2019

The 26-year-old is coming off a straight sets victory over Kiki Bertens in fourth round action early on Monday and has now advanced at least as far as the quarterfinals in each of her three tournament appearances in 2020 going into Tuesday night’s Muguruza vs Pavlyuchenkova matchup at Melbourne Park.

Muguruza is coming off a difficult campaign in 2019, failing to get past the round of 16 in a tournament after picking up her only win of the season at the Monterrey Open. That run included a dismal performance in Grand Slam tournament action, with Muguruza suffering first round losses at both Wimbledon and the US Open after bowing out in the fourth round at both last year’s Australian Open and French Open.

Former No. 1 Hopes to Overcome Past Struggles in Melbourne

Muguruza’s disappointing year took its toll on her already fading position in the WTA Rankings. After climbing to No. 1 following her victory at Wimbledon in 2017, the eight-year pro has been in steady decline since, bottoming out at No. 36 by the end of 2019 before rebounding to No. 32 going into Melbourne.

The two-time Grand Slam champion opened 2020 with a gutsy performance in Shenzhen, eking out a pair of three-set victories on her way to an eventual semi-final loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova that marked her best finish since last spring’s in Monterrey. Muguruza followed up with a drive to the quarterfinals at the Hobart International earlier this month, but was forced to withdraw due to illness.

While Muguruza has shown signs of a turnaround, she has plenty of work to do to overcome some recent disappointing results at Melbourne

While Muguruza has shown signs of a turnaround, she has plenty of work to do to overcome some recent disappointing results at Melbourne, where she has reached the quarterfinals just once in seven career appearances, including an exit in the fourth round a year ago.

Pavlyuchenkova Shows Grit in Early-Round Action

Pavlyuchenkova makes her third appearance in the quarterfinal in four years pegged as a lengthy +155 underdog in the Australian Open odds. No. 3 on the WTA Rankings, Pavlyuchenkova endured a tough road through the opening rounds, capped by a narrow three-set victory over Angelique Kerber in fourth round action.

The 28-year-old needed tiebreakers in each of her four opening round victories, including her epic 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 victory over Kerber. Pavlyuchenkova also showed grit in her recent march to the final at the 2019 Kremlin Cup, where she fell in three sets in her finals clash with Belinda Bencic. The Russian star also pulled off one of the biggest upsets of this year’s Australian Open, knocking off second-seeded Karolina Pliskova in straight sets in third round action.

Muguruza Holds Clear Head-to-Head Edge

This week’s clash marks the sixth all-time meeting between these players, and the first in Grand Slam tournament action. Muguruza holds a clear advantage in head-to-head contests, posting wins in four of five meetings. That run includes victories in each of their three tilts on hard court, capped by straight sets win in the round of 16 at the 2016 Cincinnati Masters. Muguruza’s sole loss to Pavlyuchenkova came in the round of 16 at the 2018 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, when she was forced to retire after the first set due to a back injury.

Muguruza rebounded to rout Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets later in the year at the Nature Valley Class in Birmingham, England, and with her recent steady play looks to be returning to the form that lifted her to the top of the rankings three years ago.

Pick: Muguruza -190; Over 21.5 (-125)
