Swiatek’s Walkover into the Quarterfinals

For the fourth straight year, the 22-year old Pole sees herself in the quarterfinals of the French Open. This time is wasn’t the way one would choose to go, after her opponent Lesia Tsurenko retired from their match. Swiatek was leading 5-1 in the first set when the match stopped.

But how has the defending champion done in the rest of the tournament? Swiatek has won 11 straight at Roland Garros, as now has an overall record of 25-2 at the Slam. Over the past week, Swiatek has not dropped a single set, and has only lost a total of nine games.

Third Straight for Gauff

Yes, she’s only 19-years old. And yes, this is her third straight French Open quarterfinal appearance.

This time around it was a straightforward win for the American. She went onto defeat Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-5, 6-2, to book her spot. Once again, her serves were a bit inconsistent, which against an opponent like Swiatek, can cost her the match. But overall, she played well, and managed to outplay her opponent.

A 2022 Finals Repeat

Swiatek has won every previous meeting between her and Gauff, building a 6-0 head-to-head record. They saw each other for the first time this year at the end of February at the Dubai Tennis Championships, and played each other in the final of the French Open last year.

Swiatek has also managed to win every match in straight sets. But will that happen again this match?

Swiatek vs Gauff Pick

It doesn’t seem like Swiatek has really broken a sweat en route to the quartefinals here. She’s playing at such a high level that barely anyone has been able to touch. Gauff herself, has also had a very impressive tournament so far, but to compare the two, it’s not even close.

The two have similar styles of play, as they dominate from the baseline. You can see a bit more variety in Swiatek’s game, especially when she plays on clay. But both move very well on the court.

Gauff is still so young, and figuring out what works for her. Clay isn’t her strongest surface, which allows for Swiatek to already have an upper hand. Given her experience and success in Paris, expect Swiatek to come out of this match the winner, but Gauff will give her a run.

Best Bet: Swiatek 2-0 (-360)
