Sofia Kenin has reached her first career Grand Slam quarterfinals after defeating Coco Gauff and ending her run at the Australian Open. The 14th seed will take on Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. The two have played each other twice on the tour, and Kenin has won both meetings last year. Her odds going into this match are extremely favorable to her moving on to the semifinals.

Sofia Kenin

The American has had an interesting route to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Through the first three rounds of the tournament, she hadn’t dropped a set. Only dropping her first set to Coco in the fourth round, where she ended up beating the 15-year-old.

Kenin had a tough battle in her first meeting against her fellow American. She lost a tiebreaker in the first set, but ended up winning the next two sets, 6-3, 6-0. After that first set she was able to dominate with her serve, only dropping serve once. She landed almost 75% of her first serves, giving her an upper-hand to Gauff’s 56%. Kenin caught a couple of breaks with Gauff’s seven double faults, but ultimately outplayed her opponent throughout, earning her a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Ons Jabeur

Ons Jabeur is continuing her historic run at the Australian Open as she beat No. 27 seed Wang Qiang in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-1. Jabeur has definitely had a tougher route to the quarterfinals, having faced former World No. 1, Caroline Wozniacki in the third round. This would be the last match Wozniacki would play, as she retired after the Australian Open.

In her fourth round match, she faced Qiang, who had won both of their previous meetings, including one just earlier in January. This time around, Jabeur was the better player. She didn’t double fault once, landed two aces, winning almost 70% of her first and second serves.

Qiang was coming off a win against Serena Williams, setting herself up as the one to beat, but she committed 23 unforced errors and was unable to break Jabeur in the second set. Jabeur was ultimately too much for Qiang, and booked herself a ticket to the quarterfinals.

Best Bet

Both players are playing the best tennis of their careers. They’ve both proven themselves throughout all four rounds, and it’s going to be a tough match for both of them. The odds aren’t as close as expected, seeing how both have been playing so well. But it does seem like Kenin will have the upper-hand going into this match.

The 14th seed has played dominant all tournament, just having a slight setback in the first set against Coco Gauff. But other than that, it’s hard to argue that Kenin won’t end up in her first Grand Slam semifinal.

Best Bets: Sofia Kenin -250, Kenin 2-1 (+285)
