  • All eyes on Serena Williams, for whom the next loss might be the final one of her long career
  • Williams is a slight underdog against world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit, who is not having a great year
  • Canadians Fernandez, Andreescu and Marino also are in action as the second round begins

As long as Serena Williams is in the US Open, she’ll be the night match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

And it’s almost like having an extra player on her side of the court. Because no matter who the opponent is, just about everyone in the stadium, which has a capacity of nearly 24,000, will be Team Serena.

US Open Day 3 Matches to Watch

Serena vs Kontaveit Pick

Despite being the No. 2  player in the world, Anett Kontaveit causes barely a ripple when she arrives at a Grand Slam tournament.

She’s not alone in that. Take away No. 1 Iga Swiatek’s long winning streak earlier this year, none of the top five are finding much consistency in 2022.

This is the 30th Grand Slam of Kontaveit’s career. And she has only gone past the round of 16 one time – at the 2020 Australian Open, where she made the quarterfinals. So despite her shiny ranking, she is rarely considered a Grand Slam contender. That is not a bad type of opponent for Williams to have, if she has to face a top player this early.

Kontaveit has never faced Williams. And she certainly has never been a situation such as the one she will face Wednesday night.

Williams’s adrenaline and will eventually appeared during her first-round win over Danka Kovinic, after a nervy start.

It will help her believe a little more, even if Kontaveit’s resumé is more illustrious.

Prediction: Serena in Two Sets (+410)

Snigur vs Marino Pick

Canadian Rebecca Marino has never made the third round of a Grand Slam. Not in her first career, and not since her comeback.

But getting a qualifier who is ranked a career-high No. 124 is a pretty good second-round outcome.

Snigur took out No. 7 seed Simona Halep in a first-round shocker. So it also means the Ukrainian was playing well enough to beat a former No. 1 and Grand Slam champion (with some help from Halep).

Marino is the favorite, another new situation for her.

She will have to handle Snigur’s unorthodox, completely flat but powerful forehand.

But Snigur will have to deal with a whole lot more firepower from Marino (including on the serve) than she did in her first round.

As well, Snigur has to get over the emotions of that huge win, as well as her participation in the fundraiser for her home country of Ukraine last week. It’s been a lot.

Prediction: Marino in Three Sets (+300)

Haddad Maia vs Andreescu Pick

Late Tuesday, the odds on the match between No. 15 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia and 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu were dead even.

Which, despite Andreescu’s current ranking of No. 48, tells you something.

Haddad Maia lapped Andreescu in the Canadian’s hometown tournament two weeks ago, reaching the final.

But she hasn’t played much since – just one match in Cincinnati, and her first-round win in New York.

The fact that she beat Ana Konjuh (a former top-25 player) 6-0, 6-0 is not a huge thing; Konjuh is just coming back from a long injury layoff.

But you would expect this one to be a battle, with Haddad Maia’s lefty power matched up with Andreescu’s full bag of options.

And Andreescu has sorted out her wardrobe issues.

Prediction: Both Players to Win a Set (+135)
