The NFL Coach of the Year award was handed out Thursday, February 10 at the NFL Honors. It was the only major award that did not have an overwhelming favorite based off the betting odds. Bengals coach Zac Taylor closed as the +150 favorite, but Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was a close second at +175. Mike Vrabel, third on the odds board, took the NFL Coach of the Year award home, though.

Here are some more notes on the movement we have seen:

  • [December 29] Bill Belichick’s odds to win NFL Coach of the Year went from +100 to +750 after his Patriots lost to the Bills in Week 16, falling out of the top spot in their division. Matt LaFleur’s Packers currently own the top seed in the NFC, and LaFleur’s COY odds have improved from +300 to +175, making him the new favorite. Frank Reich, whose Colts upset the Cardinals in Week 16, also saw significant odds movement, going from +1600 to +300, the second-best odds on the board.
  • [December 22] Though his Patriots lost in Week 15, Bill Belichick’s NFL Coach of the Year odds improved from +110 to +100. Matt Lafleur’s odds improved from +800 to +300, the second-best odds on the board, with the Packers becoming the first team to clinch their division title and also taking over the top spot in the NFC. A loss to the Lions sent Kliff Kingsbury’s odds from +600 to +1600.
  • [December 14] After Kliff Kingsbury’s Cardinals lost to the Rams on MNF of Week 14, his NFL Coach of the Year odds faded from +350 to +600, still the second-best odds on the board. This leaves Bill Belichick as the clear cut favorite atop the board at +110.
  • [December 7] Bill Belichick is now nearing even-money to win NFL Coach of the Year. His Patriots took down the Bills in Buffalo in Week 13, giving them a 1.5-game lead in the AFC East and the top spot in the AFC. Belichick’s NFL COY odds improved from +300 to +125 as a result.
  • [November 30] With the Patriots winning their sixth straight game in Week 12, their defense looking very strong, and Mac Jones turning in a fantastic rookie season, Bill Belichick has become the favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year. Belichick’s NFL Coach of the Year odds improved from +500 to +300 to leap Kliff Kingsbury, whose Cardinals were on bye, on the board.
  • [November 23] An embarrassing loss to the Texans has seen Titans head coach Mike Vrabel’s NFL Coach of the Year odds fade from +400 to +600. He was the favorite entering Week 11. Kliff Kingsbury, whose Cardinals beat the Seahawks without Kyler Murray in the lineup, is now the favorite.
  • [November 15] Over the past two weeks, Titans boss Mike Vrabel has moved from a +2000 longshot to the +400 favorite. Tennessee is riding a six-game win streak and has a three game lead on Indianapolis in the AFC South.
  • [November 1] The Chargers’ loss to the Patriots in Week 8 has resulted in Brandon Staley’s NFL Coach of the Year odds fading significantly. He is no longer the favorite to win the award, as Mike McCarthy, whose Cowboys managed to beat the Vikings without Dak Prescott in Week 8, has taken over.
  • [October 26] After the Bengals hammered the Ravens in Week 7, Zac Taylor’s NFL Coach of the Year odds improved from an average of +3250 all the way to +1000, putting him among the top five contenders.
  • [October 19] Broncos head coach Vic Fangio, who was among the top contenders to close out September, has seen his NFL Coach of the Year odds plummet with Denver’s three-game losing streak. His odds were +1000 back on September 28, but are now at an average of +2250.
  • [October 12] Brandon Staley has become a heavy favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year after his Chargers beat the Browns in Week 5, marking their fourth win in five weeks. Sean McDermott’s odds also saw a significant boost following Buffalo’s win over Kansas City on Sunday Night Football.
  • [October 5] Despite having the only undefeated team in the league, and upsetting the Rams in Week 4, Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury only has the third-best odds to win NFL Coach of the Year. His odds did improve from an average of +1700 to +1050, but Brandon Staley remains the favorite, and Sean McVay is still given slightly better odds as well.
  • [September 28] After Brandon Staley’s Chargers upset the Chiefs in Week 3, the first-year head coach has taken back the top spot on the board for NFL Coach of the Year odds, sending Sean McVay back to second. Vic Fangio and Matt Rhule also saw their odds significantly improve after their respective teams have gotten off to 3-0 starts to the season.
  • [September 21] Sean McVay has overtaken Brandon Staley as the favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year after Week 2. McVay’s Rams are off to a 2-0 start, while Staley’s Chargers lost to the Cowboys in Week 2. Jon Gruden’s odds have improved from an average of +4450 to +1850, making him a top ten contender, with his Raiders also off to a 2-0 start.
  • [September 14] Brandon Staley remains the favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year after his Chargers beat the Washington Football Team in Week 1. Sean Payton saw his NFL Coach of the Year odds improve from an average of +2000 to +1150 following his Saints upset over the Packers. If Payton can turn Jameis Winston into a top tier quarterback, he’ll be a very strong contender for the award.
  • [September 7] First-year head coach Brandon Staley of the LA Chargers has emerged as the clear favorite in odds to win NFL Coach of the Year. Fellow first-time head coach Arthur Smith (Falcons) sits second on the board.
  • [May 28] Kevin Stefanski has broken away from the pack as the favorite to win NFL COY, despite the fact that no coach has won the award in back-to-back years since Joe Gibbs in 1982 and 1983 seasons.
  • [May 14] Kyle Shanahan, Kevin Stefanski (last year’s Coach of the Year), and Brandon Staley (Chargers first-year head coach) have opened as the co-favorites to win the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year.
