Sep. 27: The Stars trimmed Tampa’s lead to 3-2 with a double-overtime victory in Game 5, which led to the Lightning dropping from -3335 to -560, while Dallas improved from +1500 to +450.
Sep. 26: A 5-4 OT win in Game 4 gave Tampa a 3-1 series lead and shortened their odds to -3335; Dallas is a +1500 longshot to pull of an improbable comeback.
Sep. 24: Up 2-1 after Game 3, Tampa Bay is an incredibly short -520 to win the 2020 Cup. Dallas’ odds faded to +411.
Sep. 22: A Game 2 win to even the series made TB’s odds (-195) even shorter than when the series started.
Sep. 19: Dallas’ Game 1 victory sent their odds from +160 to -114, while Tampa faded from -180 to -106.
Sep. 17: Finally rid of those meddlesome Islanders, Tampa has consolidated its status as favorites, opening at -180 against the Stars (+160)
Sep. 15: The Dallas Stars have won the Western Conference and sit at +150.
Sep. 14: One win away from a berth in the finals, Tampa Bay is a -146 favorite, on average.
Sep. 13: Up 3-1 on the Golden Knights (+575), the Dallas Stars (+198) finally have better odds than Vegas to win the Cup.
Sep. 12: Tampa’s Game 3 setback to the Islanders resulted in their odds fading from -125 to +115. NYI jumped from +2700 to +775.
Sep. 11: Thanks to a 2-1 OT win in Game 3 to give them a 2-1 series lead, Dallas’ odds improved from +700 to +365. However, they remain well behind Vegas (+268).
Sep. 10: TB is an odds-on favorite (-115) to win the 2020 Stanley Cup after going up 2-0 on NYI. Expect those odds to fade slightly if VGK takes a 2-1 series lead on DAL.
Sep. 9: VGK improved from +250 to +160 after evening its series with DAL at 1-1. The Stars plummeted from +380 to +650.
Sep. 8: TB’s 8-2 beatdown of NYI in Game 1 of the East. Conf. final has moved the Lightning into the driver’s seat at +100.
Sep. 7: Despite losing Game 1 to the Stars, VGK is still the Stanley Cup favorite in the West at +230 compared to Dallas at +325
Sep. 6: Down to four, the hierarchy is the Golden Knights (+145), Lightning (+180), Islanders (+500), and Stars (+650).
Sep. 5: VGK (+ 140) and Dallas (+650) both advanced to the Western Conference final, but as evidenced by the disparity in their Stanley Cup odds, Vegas is heavily favored.
Sep. 4: The Flyers (+900) and Canucks (+1600) were at +3500 and +125000, respectively, 72 hours ago. Both have clawed back from 3-1 series deficits to force Game 7s against the Islanders (+900) and Golden Knights (+325).
Sep. 3: The Avalanche have pulled even with the Stars in their best-of-seven series (3-3) and rocketed past them in the Stanley Cup odds (+650 to +1100).
Sep. 2: The Canucks and Flyers both staved off elimination last night. Still in a 3-2 to Vegas, Vancouver’s odds improved from +125000 to +5000. Philadelphia went from +3500 to +1500, meaning sportsbooks are giving them a solid chance to win two more against NYI.
Sep. 1: Up 3-1 on the Canucks, VGK (+180) has the best odds, even though Tampa bay (+195) has ousted Boston and is onto the Eastern Conference final.
Aug. 31: The Lightning, Islanders, Stars, and Golden Knights all saw dramatic improvement after taking 3-1 series leads, while the Bruins, Flyers, Avalanche, and Canucks are on life support, especially Vancouver.
Aug. 28: A 7-1 setback to Tampa in Game 3 led to Boston fading from +545 to +750. Jaroslav Halak does not look like a championship-caliber goalie in place of Vezina-favorite Tuukka Rask.
Aug. 26: Down 2-0 to the Stars, the Avalanche have fallen steeply from +375 to the +1100 to +1200 range.
Aug. 21: VGK is perceived to have the easiest second-round matchup (vs VAN) and are, as a result, heavy +350 favorites, followed by COL at +375 and TB at +400.
Aug. 17: Holding a 3-1 lead on Chicago, Vegas (+325) has become the Stanley Cup favorite, narrowly ahead of Colorado (+350).
Aug. 10: The Flyers and Golden Knights are listed as co-favorites at +550 odds heading into the first round of the playoffs.
Aug. 5: Tampa Bay (+500) has the inside track on the #1 seed in the East and is now alone at the top of the odds.
July 17: Despite having to play a whole extra round, the Pittsburgh Penguins (+1200) have the same odds to win the Cup as the Washington Capitals.
June 6: The longest odds to win the Cup now belong to the Florida Panthers (+5500) and Montreal Canadiens (+5000).
May 27: The odds to win the Cup now show a massive gap between the top-four teams in each conference – who will receive byes to the Round of 16 in the 24-team playoff format – and the rest of the field, who will all play in best-of-five series in the “Qualifying Round”.
May 11: However the NHL playoffs look when the league returns, it’s clear sportsbooks see Columbus (+10000) as the cut-off point for potential playoff teams. After the Jackets, there’s a steep drop to the Blackhawks (+25000) and then an even bigger drop to the Ducks (+75000).
Mar. 18: With ample time to mull it over, bettors and sportsbooks evidently believe the Flyers are legit Cup contenders; the hottest team in the league at the time of the pause is now a top-five favorite at +900.
Mar. 13: Some sportsbooks have left their NHL futures up during the coronavirus hiatus; consensus is that it will help the league-leading Bruins (+500), who have more time to recover after a deep playoff run last season.
Mar. 4: The Bruins are back at the top, currently +600 on average, thanks to an 8-2-0 run that included a statement 2-1 victory in Tampa Bay.
Feb. 25: After the trade deadline, the odds have not shifted much. Tampa’s additions of Blake Coleman and Zach Bogosian consolidated their status as favorites at +550.
Feb. 18: The Leafs (+2000) are among the top-12 favorites once again now that they have moved back into a playoff spot in the East.
Feb. 10: A lukewarm 4-2-2 run has led to VGK’s odds improving from +1800 to +1600. It doesn’t take much for those betting-darlings to start taking action.
Feb. 3: The Canucks have made the biggest improvement of late, moving all the way to +1500, seventh-best in the entire NHL.
Jan. 28: The Capitals improved to +725, but six teams are now +900 or shorter (Lightning, Bruins, Blues, Avalanche, and Penguins).
Jan. 22: Four of the top-five favorites are in the East: the Capitals (+800), Bruins (+835), Lightning (+850), and Penguins (+1000). Only the Avs (+950) crack the top-five from the West.
Jan. 10: Winners of nine straight, the Lightning have moved into a tie for third-best Stanley Cup odds at +900 on average.
Dec. 27: The Capitals are now the sole favorite at +750, sitting three points clear of the league with 57 points in 38 games (26-7-5).
Dec. 11: The Islanders have fallen to +1400 and out of the top five. Since their 17-game point streak ended, they are just 4-4-1.
Dec. 6: The Bruins (+700) are considerably shorter than the current second-favorite, Colorado (+1000), thanks to an 8-0-2 run.
Nov. 26: The Islanders have leapt all the way to third in the futures odds (+1000) thanks to a 17-game point streak.
Nov. 18: Toronto (+1200) and Vegas (+1200) are both dropping amid a run of poor play.
Nov. 8: The love for the Bruins continues; the B’s are now alone at the top at +700, followed by Vegas (+800).
Nov. 5: With a sterling 11-1-2 record and NHL-best +21 goal difference, the Bruins are tied atop the latest Stanley Cup odds at +750.
Oct 29: Colorado is now atop the odds, tied with the Maple Leafs at +700. Tampa (+800), Boston (+850) and Vegas (+850) round out the top five.
Oct. 22: Not every sportsbook agrees, but both the Sabres and Coyotes have moved up considerably at certain sites (see table below).
Oct. 16: The much-hyped Devils are still winless and have dropped out of the top 12 in the Stanley Cup odds (+2700). The Hurricanes jump in (+1600).
Oct. 9: The Capitals’ 2-0-1 start has launched them back into the top ten. An injury to Evgeni Malkin has led to the Penguins (+2600) being the biggest early-season sinkers.
Oct. 3: After briefly falling out of the top 12, Washington is back in at +1800, moving ahead of division rival Carolina (+2000).
Sep. 27: With opening night less than a week away, Vegas (+850) has moved from third to second in the odds, overtaking Toronto (+940).
Aug. 23: Honestly, there’s nothing to see here. It’s a quiet period in the NHL offseason and the odds really haven’t changed. (I guess no one considers Derick Brassard signing with the Islanders a “difference-maker”.)
Aug. 16: Bettors are down on the Flames’ chances. They started at +1500, well below the main favorites, and have since dropped to +1700. The goaltending concerns have not been ameliorated in the offseason.
Aug. 8: The Panthers (+1867) have bumped the Jets (+2067) out of the top-12.
July 11: The Rangers odds have continued to shorten after landing Artemi Panarin in free agency, now reaching +3300.
July 7: Nashville and Dallas saw the biggest movement among top contenders following the first week of free agency, as the former added Matt Duchene, while the latter signed Joe Pavelski and Corey Perry.
June 26: After taking Jack Hughes #1 overall in the 2019 draft and then trading for PK Subban from Nashville, the Devils are the biggest risers, going from +7000 to +5333, on average.
June 13: The Tampa Bay Lightning have opened as the favorites to win the 2020 Stanley Cup; the Vegas Golden Knights have been given the best odds among Western Conference teams.

Top Eastern Conference Contenders

The Eastern Conference had won three straight Stanley Cups before the St Louis Blues won in 2019. Three of the top four contenders for the 2020 Stanley Cup, based on the opening odds, reside in the East .

Atlantic Division

Heading into the season, no team from the Atlantic had won the Stanley Cup since the Boston Bruins in 2011. But three of the top four contenders, based on the opening odds, were from the Atlantic: Tampa Bay, Boston, and Toronto.

Metropolitan Division

The Metro was the only division that didn’t have a team open in the top eight 2020 Stanley Cup favorites – the Capitals were tied for the ninth-best odds.

Eight of the top-12 preseason contenders for the 2020 Stanley Cup were in the Western Conference, including 2019 champion St Louis.
