Love him or hate him, Don Cherry was a massive part of the hockey media. To give non-Canadian readers a snapshot of his stature in the Great White North, Cherry was ranked 7th on a list of the “Greatest Canadians” by the CBC in 2004, ahead of Wayne Gretzky (10th) and Alexander Graham Bell (9th).
The former Boston Bruins head coach was in his 35th year of hosting Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada. But that came to an end on the weekend when the 85-year-old was fired for offensive comments he made about immigrants on the air.
We won’t focus on the backstory here. Suffice to say, the following comments are what led to Cherry being relieved of his duties.

Poppies are worn in Canada as a symbol of respect, gratitude, and remembrance of military veterans.
