Marquette (9-6, 1-3 Big East) is a 2-point road favorite against Georgetown in a Big East game at 6:30 pm ET, Friday, on FS1. The Golden Eagles enter after their largest margin of victory over a ranked team in school history, an 88-56 trouncing of No. 16 Providence on Tuesday.

Georgetown (6-5) is playing its Big East opener after its first four scheduled conference games were postponed because of Covid-19 issues. The Hoyas have not played since an 83-70 loss home to TCU in the Big East/Big 12 Battle on Dec. 18 that broke a three-game winning streak.

Georgetown is no stranger to Covid-related layoffs. The Hoyas lost to Marquette at home after a nine-day layoff last season, but they were not negatively impacted by a later 20-day forced break following a 75-69 loss on Syracuse on Jan. 9.

The Hoyas beat beat Providence 73-72 at home Jan. 30 and topped Creighton 86-79 on the road on Feb. 3 to begin a 10-4 run that led to the Big East tournament title and an unexpected berth in the NCAA tournament before a first-round loss to Colorado.

Eagles Have Been Up, Down

Marquette broke a season-long four-game losing streak the last time out in its most complete game of the year in the blowout of Providence, which had won eight in a row –including victories over ranked teams Seton Hall and UConn and New Year’s Day blowout of DePaul — and played without third-leading scorer A.J. Reeves.

It has been a streaky year, After winning seven of their first eight, the Golden Eagles hit a skid against a tough schedule that included losses to No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 7 UCLA, Xavier and UConn, The most dispiriting defeat was a 75-69 double overtime Jan. 1 home loss to Creighton in which the Bluejays hit a three-pointer at the end of the first overtime after Marquette opted not to foul.

Second-year freshman forward 6’7 Justin Lewis had a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double against the Friars, his fourth double-double of the season. He leads the Golden Eagles in scoring (15.7) and rebounding (8.2), but trouble comes when he strays too far from the rim. Lewis is shooting 41.8 percent from the floor, a. number dragged down by his 27.1 percent rate from three-point range.

Maryland graduate transfer guard 6’5 Darryl Morsell (13.3 points) is the Golden Eagles’ other double-figure scorer. Freshman guard 6’4 Kam Jones (8.1 points) returned from a one-game Covid absence to hit four threes off the bench against Providence.

Athletic second-year freshman 6’9 Oso Ighodaro had 16 points against the Friars after getting 22 against Creighton, George Mason transfer guard 6-1 Tyler Kolek had nine assists and senior center 6’10 Kur Kuath had nine points and seven blocked shots in 19 minutes.

The Golden Eagles have held four of their last six and five of their last eight opponents under 40 percent shooting from the field. but they have been unable to take full advantage because of a minus-2.5 rebound margin and 43.5 percent field goal percentage.

Hoyas Try Again

The Hoyas will finally return to the court after Big East road games at Providence and Creighton and home games against St. John’s and Xavier were postponed because of Covid irregularities. Their first three have been rescheduled for later in the month, which will make for an incredibly heavy workload, but for now the balanced Hoyas are rested and ready.

Freshman guard 6’5 Amino Muhammad leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, and three others are putting up similar scoring numbers — senior guard 6’7 Kaiden Rice (14.5 points), senior guard 6’5 Donald Carey (12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds) and sophomore point guard 6’0 Dante Harris (12.8 points, 5.3 assists).

Rice, a transfer from The Citadel, has made 43 of 101 three-point attempts (42.6 percent) and had a 10-three game against UMBC on Dec. 8. He ranks second in Division I with 4.3 makes per game.
