Odds that Tom Brady Unretires Again in 2023

It’s déjà vu, all over again.

On Wednesday, Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady announced his retirement from the NFL in a short video, saying that this time was for good.

It’s the second straight year TB12 has retired, both times on Feb 1. The last time, he needed just 40 days and no games missed to announce he was coming back.

Is a return on the horizon for him again? Or will the greatest of all time finally settle into that mammoth 10-year, $375 million broadcasting deal with FOX?

If his retirement is concrete, Brady will have ended his career as the most accomplished player in NFL history.

He’s the only player to win seven Super Bowl titles, and five Super Bowl MVPs. Brady also owns every significant passing record, including regular-season passing yards (89,214) and TD passes (649).

He’s also got an NFL-best 251 regular season wins.

TB12’s GOAT Status Cemented

If there was anyone in the NFL with nothing left to prove, it’s Brady.

The 45-year-old had an off year by his standards. He led the Bucs to a division title, but with an 8-9 mark. It was the first time that any team he’s led finished below .500 in his career.

Many of the team’s deficiencies that Brady’s greatness could mask in the past were exposed in this difficult season. The Bucs’ offense averaged 18.4 points per game, the 8th-lowest output in the league.

While the offensive line made him the least-sacked QB in the NFL, they couldn’t open up running lanes, as Tampa put up just 76.9 rush yards per game. That lack of balance left most of the heavy lifting to Brady.

And yet, the 45-year-old didn’t show the deterioration of arm strength or the ability to pick apart a defense. He still was third in the NFL with 4,694 passing yards and threw 25 TD passes – the 8th-best mark in the league.

Things are a little different this time around. Brady’s return to the NFL after a short retirement stint played a big part in a divorce this year with wife and model Gisele Bundchen.

A Brady retirement story leaked before Brady was ever able to get to speak on it first. Some claimed his return was a spite move, preferring to play another year to leave on his own terms. There was no such swirl of rumor and reports on Wednesday.

Teams That Could Use Brady

Teams will definitely kick the tires to sense if there’s a Brady comeback. For all the talent in the NFL, high-level QB play is still scarce and in severe demand.

In the short term, teams built to win now, like the San Francisco 49ers, could use a healthy Brady to guide their offense. Their QB room is entirely still in rehab this summer and beyond and still made it all the way to the NFC Championship.

Plugged into the Dolphins’ attack — a team unsure of the status of pivot Tua Tagovailoa — Brady could theoretically light the league on fire with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as his main targets.

Mike Vrabel and the Titans aren’t sexy, but they’ve got a solid program that Brady could definitely elevate. Las Vegas might not be all the way there, but Brady and Davante Adams makes for a dynamite start.

The New York Jets seem to have the pieces assembled to make a run, except for second-year man Zach Wilson at QB. TB12’s presence would be wild in the AFC East, where the Bills currently reign supreme.

Unless Tampa makes some major upgrades, difficult as they’re up against the cap already before having to release players, a fourth year in TBay seems unlikely.

What’s the Best Bet?

Brady did this retirement in the way I always envisioned him doing it: not a lot of pomp, definitely humbled, and clear in his decision.

This season showed he still has the ability, but his presence alone doesn’t make a team a contender anymore, a lesson he had to face after a trying campaign.

He said after ending the first retirement that he had unfinished business. Unless a team can show him a direct path to title number eight, get used to his analysis in the booth.
