An intriguing Eastern Conference battle is on the schedule this Monday when the Detroit Pistons (23-22, 13-11 away, ATS) visit the conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers (36-9, 21-3 home, ATS), who are on a season-worst three-game losing streak.

I have been expecting the Cavaliers’ regression for weeks, and it finally seems to have started. The improvement in Cleveland’s shooting this year compared to last (and, really, all others this core has been together) was and is completely unsustainable. We’re talking about a group that finished last year with a 55.7% effective field-goal percentage (13th in the NBA).

Yet, this season, that number is up to 58.7%, which is not only first in the NBA, it’s nearly 2% better than any other team. (The Nuggets have the second-best EFG% at 56.9%.)

In last Wednesday’s 109-108 road loss to the Rockets, Cleveland had one of its worst shooting games of the season, hitting just 42.3% from the floor. In Saturday’s 135-131 home loss to that same Rockets team, it was the defense letting the Cavaliers down. Cleveland hit 51.6% from the field but allowed Houston to shoot 54.9% including 46.4% from three.

On the other side of tonight’s ledger is a Detroit team that appears ready to make the jump to postseason contender. Not only are the Pistons sitting a game over .500 over halfway through the season, they have improved their Net Rating from all the way to -0.8 (17th) this year.

Unlike the Cavs, the Pistons’ improvement makes sense. This is an extremely young team that was decimated by injuries in past season. Cade Cunningham (24.9 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 9.4 APG) has made the leap to bonafied All-Star and his supporting cast. The Pistons lost 121-113 at Orlando last time out, stemming an impressive two-game win streak (107-96 at Houston, 114-104 at Atlanta). They’re 6-4 in their past ten.

Detroit is one of just eight teams in the NBA with a better win/loss record on the road (13-11) than at home (10-11).

Jaden Ivey (17.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.0 APG) remains out for the Pistons, while the Cavaliers will be missing Caris LeVert (10.8 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 3.8 APG), Isaac Okoro (5.8 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 1.6 APG), and Dean Wade (6.0 PPG, RPG, 1.6 APG).

The Pistons/Cavaliers player props list Cunningham with a game-high point total of 26.5, one higher than Mitchell at 25.5. Garland (21.5 O/U) is the only other player over 20.

Cunningham also has the highest assist prop on Monday night at 9.5. Only Trae Young (11.5 APG) and Nikola Jokic (10.1 APG) are averaging more assists per game than Cunningham’s 9.4.
