The Detroit Tigers (48-54) welcome the Kansas City Royals (43-60) to Comerica Park Thursday night as they begin a four-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET / 3:30 PM PT, with broadcast coverage on DSN, ROYL, and MLB Network.

Both teams are having difficult seasons, however Detroit still has a puncher’s chance of sneaking into the postseason conversation, as they currently sit 4.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot. Detroit are favorites in the MLB odds to win for the sixth time in the last eight against Kansas City. Keep reading for my predictions and breakdown for this contest.

When breaking down this matchup, the statistical disparities on the mound make the home side my clear choice. I am backing the Tigers moneyline (-194 at Kalshi) to open the series with a victory. The Tigers send Troy Melton to the hill, and he has been spectacular this season. In seven of his nine starts, he’s allowed one or no runs at all.

The Royals counter with Randy Dobnak, who has a 1.93 ERA but a much more concerning 1.50 WHIP in a limited 14.0-inning sample size. The Tigers have been significantly more reliable pitching-wise, carrying a 3.65 team ERA compared to the 4.94 mark for the Royals.

In the MLB player props market, I am targeting Vinnie Pasquantino Over 0.5 Hits (68¢ at Kalshi). He has exceeded 0.5 hits in four of six games against the Tigers. Zooming out, the infielder cashed this prop in 13 of his last 15 games overall, giving this play an 87% hit rate.

Starting Pitchers: Troy Melton vs Randy Dobnak

When breaking down this starting pitching matchup, the discrepancies in underlying metrics are glaring. Melton takes the mound for the Tigers carrying a pristine 5-1 record. His 1.80 ERA is fully supported by an elite 0.87 WHIP and a microscopic .170 opponent batting average.

On the opposing side, Dobnak brings a surface-level 1.93 ERA across his recent outings. However, I advise proceeding with caution. Dobnak allows a heavy amount of traffic on the basepaths, indicated by a concerning 1.50 WHIP and an elevated 5.14 BB/9.
