  • App State looks to bounce back on the road Friday night after managing just three points against Old Dominion.
  • Coastal Carolina enters off a road win at Marshall, but its defense has been giving up yards in bulk en route to a 2-4 record.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-2, 0-1 Sun Belt) are searching for a prime bounce-back spot after a frustrating 10-3 loss to the Old Dominion Monarchs. They hit the road to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-4, 1-1 Sun Belt), who secured a hard-fought 27-21 road victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd. Kickoff is set for Friday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. ET at Brooks Stadium in Conway, SC, on ESPN2.

Neither team is commanding College Football Playoff futures action right now, but this clash presents a fantastic puzzle for traders using prediction market apps. Coastal Carolina wants to defend its home turf and build on last week’s win, while App State aims to prove its offensive baseline is much higher than what it showed last week.

Below, I break down where the true value in this Sun Belt East affair lies before you lock in your Friday night portfolio.

The statistics point to the visiting Mountaineers. App State averages 28.4 points per game while allowing just 19.8, and its defense is holding opponents to 4.76 yards per play.

Coastal Carolina has struggled defensively, allowing 403.3 total yards and 189.7 rushing yards per game at 6.21 yards per play. That plays right into the hands of App State running back Jaquari Lewis, who has 261 rushing yards and four touchdowns through five games.

The loss to Old Dominion looks like an outlier. Malachi Singleton completed just 5 of 23 passes that day, but he threw for 317 yards at NC State and 331 yards against Charlotte in the two games before it. Sam Pickett III (21 catches, 333 yards, three touchdowns) gives him a reliable target.

Coastal leaned heavily on the ground at Marshall, rushing for 235 yards while Deuce Bailey completed 8 of 18 passes for 73 yards. Bailey is completing 53.8% of his throws this season, which makes it tough for the Chanticleers to keep pace if App State builds an early lead.

At 53¢, App State carries a 53% implied probability for the more complete team on both sides of the ball. My App State vs Coastal Carolina prediction is the Mountaineers to win outright.

App State vs Coastal Carolina Picks

  • Pick: Over 48.5 Total Points (-108 at BetMGM)

Combining App State’s 28.4 points per game with Coastal Carolina’s 25.2 yields a baseline of 53.6 total points, comfortably above the 48.5-point benchmark.

Coastal’s defense is the bigger driver. The Chanticleers allow 24.3 points per game, and their last two home games against Georgia Southern and Liberty finished with 55 and 51 combined points.

Both teams sit at +4 in turnover margin. Coastal’s 13 takeaways against 9 giveaways point to a more volatile game script, and short fields from either side only help the over.

Coastal Carolina will likely lean on running back Dominic Lee-Knicely, who ran for 169 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries at Marshall, to control the clock and move the chains. That style limits possessions, but he is averaging an efficient 5.84 yards per carry.

At -108, the over carries a 51.9% implied probability. That is a fair price for App State vs Coastal Carolina picks built on two offenses with enough firepower to push this game into the fifties.

Odds as of Friday, Oct. 16.

The App State vs Coastal Carolina betting line makes the Mountaineers a slight road favorite in both markets: -1 (-111) and -118 at BetMGM, and 53¢ on Kalshi. The key takeaway is that both venues view this as close to a coin flip, so shopping for the best number matters.

That 53¢ Yes price means you risk 53¢ to win 47¢ before fees if App State wins, while the Coastal Carolina Yes contract trades at 49¢. If you are comparing venues, apps like Kalshi can offer different prices on the same outcome. Sportsbook bettors can find more options among the top college football betting apps.

The biggest gap is on defense. App State allows nearly 1.5 fewer yards per play and 52 fewer rushing yards per game, which supports the road side and gives Lewis a favorable matchup on the ground.
