The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement issued civil penalties to three licensed sportsbooks totaling nearly $100,000 earlier this month.
State gaming regulators issued civil penalties to Fanatics Betting and Gaming, DraftKings, and theScore for various New Jersey sports betting violations.
The civil penalties ranged from accepting improper bet types, accepting improper bets on unauthorized events, and violation of self-exclusion rules.
DGE Fines theScore $78,000
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement issued a civil penalty to theScore regarding a violation of N.J.A.C. 13:69N-1.11(a). The code, regarding patron wagers, prohibits licensed sportsbook operators from accepting wagers on unauthorized sports events and/or accepting unauthorized bet types.
According to the DGE, theScore violated the following code:
A sports pool operator shall not accept any wager on a sports event, unless it has provided written notification to the Division of the first time that wagering on a category of wagering event (for example, wagering on a particular type of professional sport) or type of wager (for example an in play wager or exchange wager) is offered to the public. Such notice shall be submitted prior to accepting a wager on such category of wagering event and shall include the name of the sports governing body and a description of its policies and procedures regarding event integrity. Notice is not required whenever the odds change on a previously offered wagering event. The Division reserves the right to prohibit the acceptance of wagers, and may order the cancellation of wagers and require refunds on any event for which wagering would be contrary to the public policies of the State.
The DGE ordered a civil penalty in the amount of $78,000 and a disgorgement of $306.48 to Penn Sports Interactive for the violation.
DraftKings, Fanatics Face Lesser Fines
Additionally, the DGE issued a civil penalty of $14,350 to DraftKings for violations of N.J.A.C. 13:69G-2.3 and N.J.A.C. 13:69G-2.4. The codes require license holders to promptly update systems once an individual is placed on a self-exclusion list. Upon receipt of a self-exclusion list, operators must identify self-excluded individuals and prevent them from betting or accessing their betting services, plus close or restrict their gaming accounts.
The company is also ordered an additional disgorgement of $4,284.27.
Finally, the DGE issued a $6,000 civil penalty to Fanatics Betting and Gaming regarding N.J.A.C. 13:69N-1.9(q), a violation of rules regarding sports pool odds.
“Fanatics Betting & Gaming worked with the New Jersey DGE to mitigate a sophisticated pricing model error. The settlement agreement is the end result of this process,” a Fanatics Betting and Gaming spokesperson told Sports Betting Dime.
Neither DraftKings or theScore responded to a request for comment.
