The 147th running of the Preakness Stakes is scheduled to take place at the historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday, May 21, 2022. We’ve been tracking the Preakness Stakes odds for every fleet-footed thoroughbred since they became available. The main graph on this page has been generated by calculating the average from our most trusted racebooks.

During the Kentucky Derby, it looked like one of the top favorites, Epicenter or Zandon would finish first. However, 80-1 longshot Rich Strike came out of nowhere to rip away the Derby win from both of them. All three of these horses start among the early Preakness Stakes favorites.

Several other Kentucky Derby contenders round out the potential field for the Preakness, however, more names could be added as the race approaches.

Win, Place & Show Preakness Stakes Bets

The three main types of horse racing bets you can make for the Preakness Stakes will be win, place and show bets.

A win bet is pretty straightforward. If you bet on a horse to win they need to finish in first place.

If you bet on a horse to place, the payout will be smaller, but they can finish in the top two.

A bet on a horse to show means they can come in either first, second or third.

Exacta, Trifecta & Superfecta Preakness Stakes Bets

The parlays of horse betting are the exotic bets that often include exactas. trifectas and superfectas.

In an exacta, you’re picking two horses that need to both finish in the top two in exact order.

A trifecta is picking three horses to finish in the top three in a certain order. And finally, a superfecta is picking four horses to finish in the top four in the correct order.

You are also able to “box” any of these options where they can finish in top two, three or four in any order.

Preakness Stakes Trends to Keep in Mind:

  • 24 horses have won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes
  • 13 horses have won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes
  • Since 2000, no horse had won the Preakness after finishing worse than sixth in the Kentucky Derby. That changed in 2019 when War of Will finished 7th in the Derby and won the Preakness. In 2021 Rombauer didn’t even run in the Derby.
  • Since 2000, seven horses have won the Preakness after winning the Kentucky Derby
  • Only one jockey has won back-to-back Preakness Stakes since 1997. That came in 2014 and 2015 when Victor Espinoza won with California Chrome and American Pharoah
  • A Bob Baffert-trained horse has only won two of the last seven Preakness Stakes

Past 10 Preakness Stakes Winners

Year Horse Jockey Trainer Time
2021 Rombauer Flavien Prat Michael W McCarthy 1:53.62
2020 Swiss Skydiver Robby Albarado Kenneth McPeek 1:53.28
2019 War of Will Tyler Gaffalione Mark E. Casse 1:54.34
2018 Justify Mike Smith Bob Baffert 1:55.93
2017 Cloud Computing Javier Castellano Chad Brown 1:55.98
2016 Exaggerator Kent Desormeaux J. Keith Desormeaux 1:58.31
2015 American Pharoah Victor Espinoza Bob Baffert 1:58.46
2014 California Chrome Victor Espinoza Art Sherman 1:54.84
2013 Oxbow Gary Stevens D. Wayne Lukas 1:57.54
2012 I’ll Have Another Mario Gutierrez Doug O’Neill 1:55.94
2011 Shackleford Jesus Castanon Dale Romans 1:56.47

Rombauer’s winning time of 1:53.62 in 2021 was the second-fastest winning time since Curlin’s win in 2007. Curling won with a time of 1:53.46. The fastest time during that stretch was 2020, Swiss Skydiver who won the Preakness Stakes with a time of 1:53.28.

Only one jockey in the past ten years has managed to win the Preakness Stakes twice. That was Victor Espinoza who won with California Chrome in 2014 and American Pharoah in 2015.

Meanwhile, on the trainer side, there’s also only one who has been a part of the winning team in the past ten years. That comes in the form of legendary trainer Bob Baffert. He won with American Pharoah in 2015 and also with Justify in 2018.

Trainers with the Most Preakness Stakes Wins

Both Bob Baffert and R Wyndham Walden still hold the lead for seven all-time Preakness Stakes wins. Last year Michael W McCarthy was a first-time winner of the race.

In 2020, Kenneth McPeek was a first-time winner with Swiss Skydiver as well.

Baffert has been a mainstay in the Preakness Stakes conversation since his first win in 1997. That came with Silver Charm, who was the first horse to win the $1,000,000 purse. Previously, the prize was set at $750,000.

Baffert then went on to be the winning trainer again the very next year in 1998 with Real Quiet. He again won back-to-back years in 2001 and 2002 with Point Given and War Emblem.

He wouldn’t win his fifth until 2010 with Lookin At Lucky, before the sixth and seventh coming in 2015 and 2018 as mentioned earlier.

Jockeys with the Most Preakness Stakes Wins

Eddie Arcaro won more American classic races than any other jockey in history and finished atop the earnings leaderboard six times from 1940 to 1958.  His record of six Preakness Stakes titles is unlikely to ever be matched anytime soon. Pat Day came the closest with five wins, his last coming in 1996 on Louis Quatorze.

Victor Espinoza has three wins, and won back-to-back in 2014 and 2015 riding California Chrome and American Pharoah. But there’s a been a different winning jockey in each of the past six Preakness Stakes, though some have won multiple times during their careers.

Espinoza and Day are the only jockeys to win in back-to-back years in the past 70 years. The next jockey to do so? That would be the aforementioned Arcaro, winning in both 1950 (Hill Prince) and 1951 (Bold).

Last year, Flavien Prat was a first-time winner with Rombauer.

Robby Albarado found himself in the winner’s circle in 2020 riding Swiss Skydiver. It was the first time he rode a winning horse in the Preakness Stakes since he rode Curlin in 2007.

Preakness Stakes Post Position

Post Position Horse Jockey
1 Simplification John Velazquez
2 Creative Minister Brian Hernandez Jr
3 Fenwick Florent Geroux
4 Secret Oath Luis Saez
5 Early Voting Jose Ortiz
6 Happy Jack Tyler Gaffalione
7 Armagnac Irad Ortiz Jr
8 Epicenter Joel Rosario
9 Skippylongstocking Junior Alvarado

The Preakness Stakes post position draw took place on Monday afternoon, May 16.

Race favorite Epicenter was drawn nearly all the way on the outside into position 8.

The 1 spot, on the rail, which is the shortest distance to the finish line, but leaves little space to maneuver, went to Simplification.

For those betting on history, it’s worth knowing that historically, a horse in the 6 spot has won the most Preakness Stakes. Since 1909, 16 times has a horse won the Preakness from position 6. Horses drawn in the 4 and 7 spots have won a total of 14 times each. There are only nine horses in this year’s Preakness, and a horse in the 9 position has only won the race four times.

With that information in your pocket, you may want to look at Happy Jack (6), Secret Oath (4), or Armagnac (7). However, both Happy Jack and Armagnac are big underdogs. Secret Oath, a filly, is among the favorites at 5-1 odds.
