Despite numerous hiccups, hurdles, roadblocks, and speedbumps, online sports betting is coming to New York. Promise. And it should be live early in the New Year, if it doesn’t squeak in under the wire for 2021.

New Yorkers have been able to place sports bets at brick-and-mortar locations for a while, but most have never had the chance to bet legally online and may not be accustomed to it.

Below, see which online sportsbooks are coming to New York, how to place an online wager, and the most-profitable way to bet New York’s major-league teams so far in their current/most-recent season.

Which Online Sportsbooks Are Coming to New York?

New Yorkers will have a litany of online sportsbooks to choose from when they are up and running. To quote Goose from Top Gun, the list is long but distinguished.

How to Make a Sports Bet Online

If you’re completely new to sports betting, go here to learn how to read sports odds. Once you understand the numbers you’ll be seeing on the screen, you’re ready to make a wager.

The process is as easy as it can get. Sportsbooks ensure that. All you will need to do is find the event you want to bet on, scroll to the specific prop/outcome, and click on it. Then you will see a text box where you enter the amount you want to bet.

One thing new bettors should be aware of is that, once you’ve entered your stake, some sportsbooks will display the potential profit of your wager, while others will display the total return (which includes the stake). The latter will always be a bigger number and may make the wager look more appealing.

For instance, DraftKings lists the total payout; FanDuel lists the potential profit. Be sure you know what you’re risking and what you stand to win with each wager you make.

New York Team Betting Trends

First, a caveat: just because a betting trend exists, there’s no guarantee it will continue. Some trends are pure fluke, while others have logical reasons behind them.

WIth that out of the way, the table below shows the return on investment for all of New York’s NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL teams in terms the moneyline, point spread, and over/under game total. (This data was retrieved from SBD Sharp, our data analysis tool.)

The ROI  percentages assume a bettor has wagered the same amount on each game for each team. (For example, if you had bet the Jets moneyline – i.e. the Jets to win straight-up – for every game this year, you would have lost 31.79% of the money wagered. That’s not good.)

New York Team Trends

Team Moneyline Spread Total (Over)
Brooklyn Nets 24.00% -16.03% -15.47%
Buffalo Bills -31.86% 7.86% -2.79%
Buffalo Sabres -14.30% 1.77% -3.87%
New York Giants -16.57% -19.36% -37.50%
New York Islanders -49.81% -8.62% -18.31%
New York Jets -31.79% -45.07% 10.71%
New York Knicks -27.13% -18.71% -12.10%
New York Mets -16.85% -16.49% -9.42%
New York Rangers 4.73% -3.97% -30.67%
New York Yankees 7.09% -9.44% -13.97%

The column for the Total is based on betting the over in every game. If you see a number that is significantly in the negative, then betting the under on those teams has been a profitable bet.

For baseball, the spread represents betting the default runline posted by sportsbooks. For NHL, it’s the same but with the puckline.
