Jose Ramirez’s Championship Pedigree

This fight has already been postponed twice due to the global pandemic and it looks like third time’s the charm this weekend. The first attempt at scheduling the fight was on February 1st and the second botched booking was on May 9th.

This is the first fight of the calendar year for both men and each are making adjustments to their training methodologies with the backdrop of the pandemic affecting their normal pre-fight regimens.

Ramirez’s last fight saw him defend his WBC belt for the third time en route to capturing WBO hardware. He defeated Maurice Hooker via sixth round TKO in July 2019.

Many are predicting that a big win here for Ramirez puts him in line for not just the biggest fights in his division but also some huge bouts outside of his weight class. A victory could jettison him towards the boxing stratosphere but if he doesn’t maintain focus, a loss can result in a fall from grace.

Viktor Postol’s Credentials as a Challenger

Postol has been the mandatory contender since he last competed over 16 months ago. His last foray into the ring saw him defeat Mohamed Mimoune via unanimous decision in their April 2019 WBC title eliminator.

The only defeats on Postol’s record are to Terence Crawford (who is pound for pound ranked and a division higher) and unbeaten reigning IBF/ WBA super lightweight champion Josh Taylor.

Viktor Postol is a true cream of the crop kind of fighter but Ramirez is thorough and analytical enough to still see some holes in Postol’s game.

Postol is a former WBC world super lightweight champion but lost the belt in his first attempt at defending it (the aforementioned Crawford defeat). Viktor Postol is a proven world champion-caliber fighter here and also could have a bit of extra motivation fueled by the chance at redemption. An opportunity to regain that belt and possibly carve out a different kind of championship legacy than the first time securing the hardware.

Considering Postol’s durability, I think this one will go the distance. Ramirez has a solid stoppage rate of 68 percent but I don’t see him having the firepower to hand the defensively savvy Postol his first loss via (T)KO. Ramirez gets the victory on points and this one goes the distance.

Pick: Jose Ramirez (-650)

Main Card Picks for Ramirez vs Postol

  1. Arnold Barboza Jr vs Tony Luis: This ten round junior welterweight co-main event features the unbeaten Barboza Jr and the veteran Luis. Though Luis is a Canadian compatriot, I don’t think I can go with the partisan pick here. Barboza Jr gets the win via judges’ decision. Pick: Arnold Barboza Jr (-1600)
