DePaul Blue Demons Road Struggles
A couple months into the season, DePaul was sitting at .500 with a 7-7 record, but then the Big East schedule picked up, and with it, the Blue Demons’ season has come undone. Going 2-7 in January, DePaul sit third from the bottom in the conference.
They have not won a road game in over two months. In addition to that, they’ve struggled to keep games close as visitors, going just 1-5-1 against the spread as the road team during that span.
Offensively, they are paced by two redshirt seniors, Umoja Gibson and Javan Johnson. Both players are putting up over 15 points per game with the 6’1 Gibson also dishing out five assists per game. He also has a nose for the ball on defense, averaging 2.2 steals per game, 25th in the nation.
Big East 3FG% leaders entering today:
Umoja Gibson (@DePaulHoops): 41.3%
Jordan Hawkins (@UConnMBB): 39.9%
Baylor Scheierman (@BluejayMBB): 39.6%
Kameron Jones (@MarquetteMBB): 37.1%— College Basketball Reference (@collegebb_ref) February 1, 2023
However, defense was the main issue for the Blue Demons last month. They failed to hold their opponents to less than 70 points in all but one game. It got worse as January moved along, as DePaul has allowed an average of 86.7 points over their last three outings.
Seton Hall Pirates Stepping up on Defense
For the Seton Hall Pirates, defense has been the key to their success. According to KenPom, they have an adjusted defense efficiency of 93.2 which ranks them 15th in the entire country. That’s one spot ahead of Kansas, a team that has the third best odds to win the NCAA tournament.
Offensively, they had one of their best games in a while in their last contest, when they defeated St. John’s, 84-72 earlier in the week. Prior to that, the Pirates hadn’t topped the 80 point mark since the calendar flipped to 2023.

Low scoring defined Seton Hall games in the month of January, as they went under the betting line in their last six games of the month. They surpassed the over against the Red Storm in their first February outing.
They really don’t have a go-to scorer on offense, with Al-Amir Dawes leading the team with an average of just 12 points per game. The Pirates enjoy slowing the pace down with the ball, as their adjusted tempo is 66.1, which puts them 234th amongst all Division I squads.
DePaul vs Seton Hall Pick and Prediction
Usually, when these teams hook up, it’s the Blue Demons who are the underdogs in the college basketball odds, as is the case once again this time around. Nevertheless, DePaul are usually able to keep these games close enough to cover the spread.

In fact, DePaul have covered in eight on the last 10 head-to-head meetings between these squads. Also trending when these two sides hook up, is the under. They’ve gone below the betting total in five of their last six matchups.
While laying 11.5-points is asking a lot, the Pirates have covered as double digit favorites in two straight, while DePaul has lost four in a row by a margin of defeat of at least 11 points each time.
Instead of looking at their recent rivalry, our prediction is based on the most recent performances each of these squads have put forth. Take the Pirates with the points in this Big East clash.
