Wolverines vs Tar Heels Betting Trends

Wednesday night’s matchup marks the first meeting between these two teams since November 2019. The Wolverines tallied a 73-64 victory as 3-point underdogs in that contest, and have taken home the victory on two occasions during a stretch of three November clashes with UNC since 2017.

Michigan has effectively shut down the Tar Heels offense in their two recent wins, limiting North Carolina to an average of 65.5 points per game. But despite those stingy performances, it has been the OVER that has prevailed in totals betting in two of their past three dates. In addition, it was the Tar Heels that picked up a decisive 86-71 win in Michigan’s lone previous trip to Chapel Hill, back in 2017.

Michigan Wolverines Outlook

Listed at No. 6 in the preseason AP Top 25 rankings, the Wolverines have steadily lost ground since opening their schedule with back-to-back wins over Buffalo and Prairie View A&M. Michigan followed up by blowing an 11-point second half lead in a stunning 67-65 home loss to Seton Hall, and were simply outclassed by an unranked Arizona Wildcats squad in an 80-62 loss in last week’s Roman Main Event final.

While the Wolverines’ recent woes have devastated their position in the national rankings, where they now sit at No. 24, they have remained resilient in the Kenpom ratings. After limiting opponents to 67 or fewer points in four of their past five outings, the Wolverines are pegged at No. 10 in adjusted defence, and at No. 9 overall.

Senior guard Eli Brooks continues to lead the attack for the Wolverines. Brooks padded his lead in team scoring last time out, draining 15 points in last Wednesday’s decisive 65-54 win over the Tarleton Texans. Hunter Dickinson has also emerged as a steady presence in the paint. The sophomore big man recorded 10 rebounds for the second time this season in last week’s win over the Texans. And in addition to closely trailing brooks in scoring, Dickinson leads the way with 8.2 rebounds per game.

North Carolina Tar Heels Outlook

After climbing to as high as No. 18 while opening their schedule with three straight outright wins, the Tar Heels’ quickly tumbled out of the AP Top 25 with back-to-back losses to a pair of nationally ranked opponents. UNC trailed from buzzer to buzzer while dropping a 93-84 decision to No. 6 Purdue as 7.5-point underdogs 10 days ago, and followed up with a lopsided 89-72 defeat at the hands of No. 17 Tennessee as 2.5-point underdogs a day later.

In addition to extending their current SU slide against nationally ranked opponents to three games, the Tar Heels have also been a steady disappointment at the sportsbooks so far this season. North Carolina remains winless against the spread in six outings after failing to cover as 23.5-point chalk in last Tuesday’s 72-53 win over UNC-Asheville, and has not helped its own cause with slow starts that has left the team facing half-time deficits in four of their past five outings.

The good news for the Tar Heels has been the continued strong play by Armando Bacot. The junior big man contributed 22 points and seven rebounds in last week’s win over the Bulldogs. And with three double-doubles to his credit so far this season, he leads the team with 15.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
