  • The Fresno State Bulldogs are 3-point road favorites when they visit the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
  • Hawaii should have quarterback Micah Alejado for this one after missing the last two with an ankle injury

It’s the Mountain West opener for both the Fresno State Bulldogs (3-1, 3-1-0 ATS), who open their conference schedule in the Aloha State, visiting the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (3-1, 2-2-0 ATS).

The Rainbow Warriors eked out a 21-20 thriller in the matchup a year ago, but the college football odds are favoring the Bulldogs for this one.

It’s a late start Saturday night, with kickoff set for 11:59pm ET from Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, with Spectrum Sports and Sripps Sports carrying the broadcast.

See below for the latest odds, preview and my betting Fresno State vs Hawaii prediction for Sept. 20.

Bulldogs Enter Conference Play on Hot Streak

Since dropping its season opener to 31-7 to Kansas, the Fresno State Bulldogs have been on a different, more dominant trajectory, ripping off three straight wins, most recently blasting Southern 56-7.

Fresno State currently sits third in Mountain West scoring, averaging 35 points a game, scoring at least 36 points in each of its last three games.

They’re doing a ton of damage on the ground, ranking inside the Top 40 in the nation at 202.5 rush yards per game, and inside the Top 30 at a healthy 5.7 yards per rush.

It’s almost certain the Bulldogs will top what they did against Hawaii last year, when they totaled 19 rush yards on 21 totes.

The rush attach has overshadowed a shaky start for QB EJ Warner, who has thrown for 716 yards and four TD’s but also has five interceptions on the young season.

Rainbow Warriors Welcome Back Alejado

It’s expected that Alejado will make his first appearance for Hawaii since their loss to Arizona in Week 1.

Backup Luke Weaver did the job in his absence, and maybe a chance to observe at field level helped the freshman to get a feel for head coach Timmy Chang’s offense.

Granted, Alejado faced a tough slate from the jump, with Stanford and Arizona on the schedule, and he won’t get a soft landing against a very good Fresno State side.

It would help if the Warriors could generate some rushing juice. They are second-last in Mountain West, posting just 95.3 yards per game, making them one of just two teams to average less than 100 yards per contest on the ground.

The Bulldogs are second in the conference in run defense at 110.5 yards per game, and they rank fifth in passing at 213 yards per contest.

If Alejado can’t get the run game going, he’ll need to perform at a high level against a defense that’s looked good in the early going.

Save that 40-6 blowout against Arizona, the Rainbow Warriors have scored at least 23 points in each of their other three games, all wins.

Hawaii’s run defense held up against Sam Houston and Portland State (combined 120 yards), but Fresno State’s run game is a level-up and I don’t think they will be able to stop the onslaught.

Fresno State’s has hit the Over in each of their last three games, and with force, topping the line by at least 13 points in each.

If Alejado can hold up his end of the bargain, there’s potential for a late-night shootout on the Island.

The 4-3 Under record in the last seven matchups is misleading here: last year’s matchup was the first time in seven games the teams haven’t scored at least 47 points.
