In a matchup of two teams that carried College Football Playoff hopes late into the regular season, #14 Oregon meets #16 Oklahoma at 9:15 p.m. ET Wednesday in the Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Oregon (10-3) and Oklahoma (10-2) are both coming off two losses in their last three games, stumbles that torpedoed their CFP hopes. Each program also has a new coach after Oregon’s Mario Cristobal left for Miami, his alma mater, and Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley moved on to Southern California.

Oklahoma is a touchdown favorite in a game that will be televised by ESPN.

Oregon Outlook

Oregon was blasted 38-10 by Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game after also being routed by the Utes 38-7 in the penultimate game of the regular season.

Passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon will be the acting head coach. Following the 2015 season as an interim coach, McClendon led Georgia to a victory over Penn State in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

Oregon hired Dan Lanning as head coach, but he will remain in his role as Georgia’s defensive coordinator until the Bulldogs finish play in the CFP.

Standout defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux is one of three Oregon players who have opted out to begin preparing for the NFL Draft along with wide receiver Devon Williams and cornerback Mykael Wright. Another wideout, Mycah Pittman, transferred to Florida State.

Thibodeaux had seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss and eight quarterback hurries this season. Williams’s 557 receiving yards led the Ducks.

Oregon still has standout running back Travis Dye. He has rushed for 1,118 yards and 15 touchdowns and has a team-high 41 receptions for 374 yards and two more scores.

Anthony Brown is a dual threat quarterback who has completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,683 yards and 15 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He has also run for 637 yards and nine TDs.

Dye had 109 total yards – 82 rushing and 27 receiving – in the Pac-12 title game. Brown was just 13-of-24 passing for 147 yards with two interceptions and was held to minus-5 yards rushing in 10 attempts.

Oklahoma Outlook

Bob Stoops has come out of retirement to serve as acting coach. He has provided a steady hand while Oklahoma prepares for Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables to take over the storied program.

Stoops was the Sooners’ coach for 17 seasons from 1999-2016, compiling a 190-48 record and winning a national championship. He is currently a studio analyst for Fox.

Oklahoma will be hamstrung in the front seven of its defense after linebackers Nik Bonitto and Brian Asamoah opted to prepare for the NFL Draft as well as linemen Isaiah Thomas and Perrion Winfrey.

The Sooners also lost quarterback Spencer Rattler, wide receiver Jadon Haselwood and tight end Austin Stogner to the transfer portal. Haselwood had a team-high 39 receptions for 399 yards and six TDs.

Rattler began the season as a prime Heisman Trophy candidate but lost his starting job to Caleb Williams. The freshman has 1,670 yards passing and 18 touchdown passes while also rushing for 408 yards and six scores.

Williams has also completed 62.5% of his pass attempts.

Oklahoma has a premier running back in Kennedy Brooks. He has 1,111 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns while helping the Sooners rank 10th in the nation in scoring offense at 38.4 points a game.

Oklahoma’s string of six consecutive Big 12 titles ended with the loss to Oklahoma State. With the Sooners down by four points, Williams was sacked on fourth down at the Cowboys’ 32-yard line with eight seconds remaining.

Oregon vs Oklahoma Prediction

The teams haven’t met since 2006 when Oregon eked out a 34-33 home win, its lone victory against Oklahoma in seven meetings.

Both teams might have a hard time getting motivated following the disappointment of late-seasons swoons and the distraction of coaching changes. However, the firepower of Williams and Brooks along with the calming influence of Stoops gives Oklahoma an edge.

  • The Pick: Oklahoma -7
