Out of the gates fast in this college football season, the upstart Texas State Bobcats (2-0, 2-0-0 ATS) visit the Arizona State Sun Devils (1-1, 0-2-0 ATS) hoping to avenge last season’s defeat.

Despite an up-and-down start to their campaign, the Sun Devils are the clear favorites in the college football odds, and will look to make it eight straight wins at home.

Action gets underway tonight at 10:30 pm ET from Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, AZ, with TNT, HBO Max, and truTV all carrying the broadcast.

Texas State finds itself as large 17.5-point underdogs on the road, and a distant +625 on the moneyline. ASU provides little value as overwhelming -950 favorites on the moneyline, with the total checking in at 60.5 points.

Sun Devils Need to Bounce Back

Perhaps Sun Devils’ quarterback Sam Leavitt’s problems begin and end with Mississippi State. The sophomore pivot was just 10-for-22 for 82 yards passing with a TD and two interceptions in ASU’s 24-20.

Last season, the Bulldogs held him to his worst passing day of the year, when he went 10-for-20 for just 69 yards. He did, however, contribute 68 yards rushing and two TDs.

Leavitt doesn’t have the security of all-world running back Cam Skattebo, who’s graduated to the NFL, but he should be just fine in the run game. Both Raleek Brown and Kaney Udoh rushed for 100+ yards, as ASU churned out 251 yards on the ground.

Texas State brings an explosive offense to the Desert, so Leavitt will have to be better if they get dragged into a track meet and want to pull out a win.

Texas State Brings High-Scoring Offense to Tempe

It’s been a stellar start to the year for the Bobcats, who currently lead the Mountain West in scoring, pouring in 47.5 points per game.

They’re coming off a 43-36 win over UTSA, a week after hanging 52 on Eastern Michigan in a 25-point romp.

All those points have helped the Bobcats to go 2-0-0 against the spread to start the campaign, and they’ve now won four straight and six of the last seven dating back to last season.

They’ve been paced by their star trio if QB Brad Jackson, RB Lincoln Pare and WR Beau Sparks, who have led the team in passing yards, rushing yards and receiving yards in back-to-back weeks.

If not for a pair of costly turnovers by Texas State that resulted in a 31-28 loss to Arizona State, it’s quite possible we’d be talking about the Bobcats potentially stacking back-to-back wins over the Sun Devils.

We know that Leavitt’s performance can only improve after his dud at Mississippi State, but will he be able to keep his team scoring if Texas State continues their torrid pace.

He’ll have to do better at keeping the offense on the field: ASU has been a brutal 4-for-24 on third down conversions this year.

That’s a lot to have to clean up to win in blowout fashion for the Sun Devils, so we’ll take the Bobcats to stay within the confines of that comfy spread.
