While the the top players in the world can be found in the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play odds, the rest of the Tour are teeing it up in the Corales Puntacana Championship. Unsurprisingly, with the big guns competing in Austin, the field in the Dominican Republic allows for a potentially unheralded champion. Joel Dahmen, who has the second shortest odds, returns as defending champion.

This will be the fifth year that this tournament will be contested as a PGA Tour event, with the two previous years before that being a Korn Ferry Tour event. There are four major champions teeing it up, including 2019 champ Graeme McDowell, Danny Willett, Martin Kaymer and Jason Dufner.

Going low is a necessity for success at this track, with three winners posting an 18-under-par score en route to their victories along with last year’s 12-under best score.

Sahith Theegala Eyes First Victory

In two of his last five starts, Sahith Theegala has taken a serious run at a title, in particular at the WM Phoenix Open, where he eventually settled for a T-3rd showing. Then at last weeks Valspar Championship, Theegala was T-7th, where he was second in both strokes gained: off-the-tee and SG: tee-to-green.

At the Phoenix Open, where he missed getting into a playoff by a single stroke, he was second in birdies, and fourth in putts per greens in regulation.

While his +2500 odds aren’t super juicy, no player in the field has super enticing odds, particularly if they’ve been playing well, since all the top players are at the Match Play. Theegala has shown the game so far this season, and has a great opportunity to make it three first-time winners in the five-year history of this PGA Tour event.

2022 Corales Puntacana Championship Best Value Picks

  1. Hudson Swafford (+4500): Hudson Swafford has tasted success on this track before, taking the 2020 iteration of this championship. He then backed that up with a T-6th showing last year. He’s had a weird 2022, with a victory at the American Express (earning a spot in the Masters odds), but then five poor events after that. When he won here in 2020, he similarly had no form coming into the week, so it potentially could happen again, with good value at +4500.
  2. Victor Perez (+6600): Just last year, Victor Perez made a run to the semi-finals of the WGC-Dell Match Play, before winding up fourth. He hasn’t been able to build off of that, although he’s made the weekend in seven straight tournaments. On sheer talent alone, the Frenchmen is one of the better talents competing, should he regain his game.
  3. Rafael Campos (+20000): In such a wide open field this is a deep dive with potential upside, at least potentially for a top-5 or top-10/20 bet. Last year, Campos nearly took home his first PGA Tour trophy at this venue, as he tied for second. In 2017 on this same track on the Korn Ferry Tour, he was T-3rd, indicating that he’s very comfortable on this course.
