Others relate to whether Woods will survive the cut at golf’s first major of the season.

Woods Working on His Game

Monday saw Woods already prepping for the week. He played nine holes at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the course that is playing host to this week’s PGA Championship.

The PGA Championship will be Tiger’s first tournament action since he tied for 40th at the Memorial last month. It will also be only his fifth official event of the PGA Tour season.

Woods isn’t getting a lot of love in the PGA Championship odds heading into the tournament. DraftKings pegs him with a betting line of +3300 to win the event. He’s listed at odds of +335 to crack the top 10 on the leaderboard.

His resume, though, suggests that it’s never wise to overlook him, even when it seems the logical course of action. Woods leads all active PGA Tour players in career major wins (15) and career PGA Tour wins (82). He’s an 11-time PGA Tour player of the year.

Is Tiger Ready to Roar?

While only Jack Nicklaus (18) shows more career major wins than Woods, lately, Tiger isn’t tending to be a force in golf’s most significant events.

Yes, he did win the Masters – but that was a victory that went completely against the grain of his recent major performances. It was his first triumph in a major since the 2008 US Open.

Since that win at Augusta, Tiger missed the cut at the 2018 PGA Championship and Open Championship while tying for 21st at the US Open. He’s finished in the top ten in just two of his last 12 major appearances.

Only two of those finishes were top five placings – the win at Augusta National and a second-place finish at the 2018 PGA Championship. However, that was his first top-10 finish in the PGA since he also placed second in 2009.

With a victory this week, Woods would capture his fifth PGA Championship, tying Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus for the most career wins in this event. However, even with the added attraction of the odds boost, a top-five finish seems beyond Tiger’s reach.

Hale and Harding

Heading to the tee for the first round on Thursday, Woods does have one factor going in his favor. His game has always meshed well with the TPC Harding Park layout.

Woods has won his last two tournaments there. After winning a WGC event at the track in 2005, he paired with Steve Stricker to held the United States team to victory at the 2009 Presidents Cup, going 5-0-0 as a tandem.

Tiger has played tournament golf just once since February. At Muirfield Village, he carded a pair of 76s en route to his 40th-place finish.

He’s missed the cut in three of his last four and four of his past seven PGA Championship appearances. Overall, Woods has failed to make the cut in six of his past 10 majors.

Still, you don’t often see positive odds when it comes to a wager on Tiger to be playing golf on the weekend at a major.

In this case, take the odds boost.
