D-Backs Betting Analysis

The Diamondbacks enter Sunday’s contest looking to avoid a series sweep after dropping the first two games in heartbreaking fashion. Arizona blew an 8-2 lead on Saturday, ultimately falling 9-8. On Friday, they lost a tight 6-5 game. The two losses have extended their losing streak to three games after a promising 4-2 start.

Offensively, the Diamondbacks have been led by All-Star outfielder Ketel Marte, who is off to a scorching start. Marte is hitting .389 with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and a 1.139 OPS through nine games. He launched a solo homer in Saturday’s loss.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has also been a force in the middle of Arizona’s lineup, batting .351 with three long balls and eight driven in. His strong start is part of the reason the D-Backs are inching toward the top 10 of the 2024 World Series odds.

On the mound, Ryne Nelson gets the starting nod for the series finale. The 26-year-old is coming off a rough 2024 debut against the Yankees, where he allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks over just 2.2 innings. Nelson went 8-8 with a 5.31 ERA in 27 starts last season. He’ll need to be much sharper to give Arizona a chance at avoiding the sweep.

The Diamondbacks have gone 0-4 as underdogs this season but 7-2 against the spread overall. The over has hit in six of their last nine games. They are just 3-9 straight up in their previous 12 meetings with the Braves.

Braves Betting Analysis

Atlanta has taken the first two games of this series in dramatic comeback fashion to improve to 5-2 on the young season. The Braves erased an 8-2 deficit on Saturday, walking it off in the bottom of the 9th on an Austin Riley RBI single for a 9-8 victory. They overcame a 5-1 hole on Friday to win 6-5.

The Braves boast one of the most lethal lineups in baseball, leading the majors in team batting average (.309), OPS (.900), and runs per game (7.2). Reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. is off to a relatively slow start by his lofty standards, hitting .259 with no homers and one steal. But the rest of the lineup has picked up the slack.

Matt Olson is raking at a .370 clip with two homers and eight RBIs. Ozzie Albies has also gone deep twice while hitting .333. Atlanta is currently the favorite to win NL East in the MLB Divisional odds by a wide margin.

On the injury front, the Braves will be without star rookie pitcher Spencer Strider, who hit the IL with an elbow issue. Catcher Sean Murphy is also sidelined. But Atlanta still has plenty of firepower.

Veteran southpaw Chris Sale takes the ball for his second start in a Braves uniform. The 34-year-old allowed two runs over 5.1 innings against the Phillies in his debut last Sunday, striking out seven. Sale is looking to prove he still has ace stuff after an injury-plagued 2023, where he posted a 4.30 ERA in 20 starts with the Red Sox.

The Braves are 5-2 as favorites this season and 3-4 ATS. The over is 5-1 in their last seven overall. They have won five of their last seven games.

Diamondbacks vs Braves Prediction

The Braves are rightfully favored, but we think the Diamondbacks can keep this one competitive and potentially pull the upset. Arizona’s lineup is dangerous and should challenge Sale, who hasn’t looked like his vintage self in recent years. If Nelson can give the Diamondbacks 5+ solid innings, their bullpen and bats can make this a game.

However, it’s simply hard to pick against the Braves right now given how well they are swinging the bat. Even with Acuña not hitting his stride yet, the rest of the lineup is crushing the ball. And Atlanta has shown a relentless ability to come from behind, which they’ve done in the first two games of this series.

This makes the “over” our best Sunday MLB pick. Neither starting pitcher inspires a ton of confidence, and both offenses are hitting at an elite level. The over has hit in both matchups so far and is 6-3 in the Diamondbacks’ last nine games, plus 5-1 in the Braves’ last seven. Expect fireworks at Truist Park on Sunday.

ATL vs ARI Pick:

  • Over 9.5 Runs (+100)
