Only one team in MLB history has ever overcome a 3-0 playoff series deficit. It just so happens the Yankees were on the losing side of history in 2004, but if they want to reach the World Series they’re going to have to replicate the improbable feat that the Red Sox pulled off that year.
That’s because New York was beaten once again by Houston in Game 3 of the ALCS, and will face elimination on Sunday night in the Bronx.

Houston vs New York Probable Pitchers
With their season on the line, the Yankees will turn to Nestor Cortes yet again. The 27-year-old was called upon in the deciding game of the ALDS, and he responded with 5 innings of three-hit ball.

Cortes pitched quite well in both ALDS appearances, holding Cleveland to three runs and nine hits over 10 innings. He was absolutely phenomenal in the final month of the regular season as well, yielding two or fewer runs in six straight starts.
He was 1-0 in his lone outing against the Astros this year, surrendering five hits and three runs over five innings. That was one of his only solid starts against Houston, as they’ve had his number in the past. Astros hitters are batting .315 over 54 at-bats against Cortes, with a .667 slugging percentage and 1.040 OPS.
McCullers Jr. vs Cortes 2022 Stats
4-2 | Record | 12-4 |
2.27 | ERA | 2.44 |
1.24 | WHIP | 0.92 |
.215 | OBA | .189 |
2.3 | SO/W Ratio | 4.3 |
Houston will counter with Lance McCullers Jr. The 29-year-old was fantastic in his 2022 playoff debut, shutting out Seattle over 6 innings in the Astros ALDS clinching win. He allowed only two hits, while striking out seven, but bruised his elbow on a champagne bottle in post-game celebration.

McCullers is fine now, and owns an excellent track record versus the Yankees. He’s held current New York batters to a .208 average over 53 at-bats, and that dominance should continue given how poorly the Yankees lineup is performing.
Astros vs Yankees Betting Analysis
New York has scored a grand total of four runs through three ALCS games. They were shutout 5-0 in Game 3, recording just three hits against Cristian Javier and a handful of relievers.
They Yankees are hitting .128 in the ALCS with 41 strikeouts, and have lost eight of 10 games to Houston in 2022. Aaron Judge is 1-for-12 in this series, and is batting only .156 with 14 strikeouts in the playoffs so far. This is the same guy who’s a runaway favorite in the AL MVP odds, and set a franchise record with 62 home runs.
Inept would be a kind way to characterize the Yankees' offense in the ALCS. Current numbers through 6th inning of Game 3:
– BA: .120 (10 for 83)
– OBP: .198
– SLG: .229
– Runs: 4
– Strikeouts: 36
– Walks: 7
– Total bases: 18 (same number Jeremy Peña and Chas McCormick combined)— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 22, 2022
Judge isn’t the only one struggling though. Five of New York’s regulars are hitting .111 or worse this series, including Judge, Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, Matt Carpenter and Josh Donaldson. Tough to win many games with an offense like that.
Houston, on the other hand, has been able to survive struggles to big names like Yordan Alvaraez and Jose Altuve, thanks to the play of their ancillary hitters. Chas McCormick hit a two-run homer in Game 3, while he, Jeremy Pena, Alex Bregman, Yuli Gurriel and Christian Vazquez are all batting .308 or better this series.

The pitching has also been lights out, as both the starters and relievers have dominated the Bronx Bombers. Houston’s bullpen has allowed only one run and five hits over 8.2 innings, after surrendering just one run in 20.1 innings of work in the ALDS.
Astros vs Yankees Prediction
Houston flat out owns New York. Not only have they taken three straight and eight of 10 meetings this season, but the dominance has been going on for the last decade.
They’re on the verge of eliminating New York from the playoffs for the fourth time in eight years, while reaching the World Series themselves for the fourth time in six seasons.
The Yankees offense is an absolute mess, and the fans know it. Both Judge and manager Aaron Boone were booed heavily in Game 3, and it took New York nearly four full innings to hit a ball out of the infield.
The Astros meanwhile, are 6-0 this postseason, and 4-2 at Yankees Stadium in 2022.
Pick: Houston Astros Moneyline (+108)
