The Blue Jays are projected to boast one of the best offenses in baseball this season. On Opening Day, they did not disappoint. Toronto piled up 10 runs against St. Louis, but needed to hang on for a one-run victory.

Online sportsbooks are bullish on them winning again on Saturday, as they opened up as road chalk over the Cardinals in the MLB odds.

Toronto vs St. Louis Probable Pitchers

Toronto will hand the ball to Kevin Gausman, who begins the season as a top-10 contender in the AL Cy Young odds.  Gausman is fresh off one of the best seasons of his career, posting 12 wins and 3.0 WAR, to go along with a personal best 7.3 K/BB rate.

Gausman is far from unhittable however, as he yielded a .272 batting average in 2022 and a .700 OPS. He gives up a ton of fly balls and is likely due for some negative regression in the home run department. His 8.5% home run rate was the lowest of his career over a full season, despite surrendering one of the highest fly ball rates of his MLB tenure (8.5%).

St. Louis certainly has the bats to expose that, and have had plenty of success against him in the past – more on that later.

Gausman vs Flaherty Stats

Kevin Gausman
VS
Jack Flaherty
12-10 Record 2-1
3.35 ERA 4.25
1.24 WHIP 1.61
.272 OBA .259
7.3 SO/W Ratio 1.5

The Cardinals will counter with Jack Flaherty. The 27-year-old missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, and when he did pitch he struggled with his control. His 1.61 WHIP was easily the worst mark of his career, and far from the upside he’s flashed in the past.

Flaherty was 9-2 with a 3.22 ERA in 17 appearances in 2021, and 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA in 2019. He’s never faced the Blue Jays in his six seasons, but Saturday will be a good test to determine if his stuff can replicate its pre-injury form.

Toronto vs St. Louis Betting Trends

Toronto put up 10 runs on opening day without hitting a home run. They produced just three extra-base hits, but got 16 singles in the victory. George Springer led the way with five hits and four runs, becoming one of the few players in MLB history with that stat line on Opening Day.

AL MVP odds candidate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a pair of hits and drove in three runs, while Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman each had 3+ hits of their own.

As for St. Louis, they got nine runs and rocked both Toronto starter Alek Manoah and the Blue Jays pen. Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado combined for four hits and four RBI, while Tyler O’Neill and Brendan Donovan each went deep.

Goldschmidt and Arenado are fresh off a year where they finished first and second in the NL in WAR, and are certainly threats to do so again. They each own a home run off of Gausman in limited plate appearances, with Goldschmidt posting a lifetime .667 average against the Blue Jays righty in six at-bats.

Toronto vs St. Louis Prediction

Of the two clubs, Toronto is getting much more love in the World Series odds. Perhaps that’s deserved, since their starting rotation is deeper, but there’s not much difference between their two lineups.

The Cardinals are one of the few teams in baseball that can go toe-to-toe offensively with Toronto, and their track record versus Gausman should encourage bettors to roll with St. Louis as a plus-money ‘dog. If Flaherty is all the way back to his pre-injury form, this bet will look like a steal.

St. Louis projects as a playoff team in 2023, and the odds for this matchup simply don’t reflect that. Grab the value with the home side.

Pick: St. Louis Cardinals Moneyline (+105)
