The Dodgers opened as -190 favorites on the moneyline and that number has gone up. While the game time forecast calls for 70 degrees, it should be a bit breezy with winds from the north at 15-20 mph and gusting to 25 mph.

Probable Pitchers

The Giants will give the ball to left-hander Alex Wood (10-4, 3.83 regular season) while Max Scherzer (15-4, 2.46) pitches for the Dodgers.

Wood spent five of the previous six seasons with the Dodgers before signing with the Giants as a free agent in January. He has pitched 52 times at Dodger Stadium, including 40 starts, and has a 17-9 record and 3.05 in Chavez Ravine.

Wood vs Scherzer

Alex Wood
VS
Max Scherzer
10-4 Record 15-4
3.83 ERA 2.46
3.87 xERA 2.89
1.18 WHIP 0.86
3.90 SO/W 6.56

After missing three weeks while on the COVID-19 injured list, Wood started three times in September and was 0-0 with a 1.38 ERA. He has lost only once in his last 17 starts, going 5-1 with a 4.03 ERA since June 8.

The Giants have gone 19-7 when Wood starts this season, though he has notched just nine quality starts. He has a 3-2 record on the road with a 4.20 ERA in 11 starts and is 6-4 with a 3.73 ERA in 19 starts at night.

The Giants are 12-2 when Wood starts following a loss. However, he hasn’t pitched since Sept. 29 when he worked six shutout innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks at home, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out six.

Wood struggled against his former team in the regular season, going 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in three starts. His career record versus the Dodgers is 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA in eight games (six starts).

Wood will be making his 21st career post-season but just third start. He has gone 1-2 with a 3.55 ERA.

Scherzer lasted just 4.1 innings in the Dodgers’ wild card game victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The three-time Cy Young winner did not factor in the decision as he gave up one run on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Scherzer, though, hasn’t lost since May 30 to the Milwaukee Brewers when he was still pitching for the Washington Nationals. He went 11-0 with a 2.54 ERA in his last 19 regular season starts.

The Dodgers are 12-0 when Scherzer has taken the mound since trading for him on July 30. He recorded quality starts in 18 of 30 regular-season starts.

In seven starts this season at Dodger Stadium, including the wild card game, Scherzer has a 3-1 record and 2.16 ERA in seven starts. The loss came while pitching for the Nationals. He is 7-2 at night with a 2.86 ERA in 17 starts.

Scherzer was limited to 0.1 innings and threw just 12 pitches in his only start against the Giants this season, leaving the June 11 game at Washington with a groin injury. He is 4-5 with a 3.84 ERA in 11 career starts versus San Francisco.

Scherzer has a 7-5 postseason record with a 3.33 ERA in 23 games (19 starts).

Can’t Solve Scherzer

Scherzer has been particularly tough on a couple of Giants. First baseman Wilmer Flores is 0 for 17 against Mad Max with eight strikeouts and left fielder Kris Bryant is 2 for 20 (.100) with 11 punchouts.

On the flip side, Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is 7 for 17 (.412) off Scherzer with three doubles and two home runs. Second baseman Tommy La Stella is 4 for 10 (.400) with two doubles, a triple and one homer.

Dodgers left fielder AJ Pollock has three doubles and two homers off Wood while going 10 for 25 (.400).

Giants vs Dodgers Pick

The Giants won six of 10 games at Dodger Stadium during the regular season and are 11-10 against the Dodgers overall in 2020, including this series.

However, the Dodgers had a convincing win in Game 2 when Cody Bellinger and Pollock hit two-run doubles in the sixth inning to put Los Angeles ahead 6-1.

Scherzer was shaky in the wild card game, but the Dodgers haven’t lost yet when he has been on the mound. Moments like this are why they traded for him.

The Pick: Dodgers moneyline -210
