You can count me among the many who had Opening Day sneak up on them this year. American’s favorite pastime begins a new season on Thursday, and one of the best pitching matchup on the slate comes to us from the Bronx.
That’s where Gerrit Cole and the Yankees will host Logan Webb and the Giants, with online sportsbooks feeling bullish on New York in the MLB odds.

Baltimore vs New York Probable Pitchers
New York will hand the ball to Gerrit Cole, who begins the season with the second shortest price in the AL Cy Young odds. Cole is fresh off a disappointing season by his standards, posting a 13-8 record, with a 3.50 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.
That was his highest ERA since he left the Pirates in 2017, while his 2.4 WAR was the second lowest mark since he departed from Pittsburgh. On the plus side, Cole led the AL in strikeouts with 257, finishing with a K/9 rate north of 11.4 for the fifth straight season.
The biggest issue he needs to address is keeping the ball in the yard. Cole surrendered a career high 33 home runs in 2022, but fortunately for him the San Francisco bats don’t pack a lot of pop.
Webb vs Cole Stats
15-9 | Record | 13-8 |
2.90 | ERA | 3.50 |
1.16 | WHIP | 1.02 |
.240 | OBA | .209 |
3.3 | SO/W Ratio | 5.1 |
The Giants will counter with Logan Webb, who set career best marks in wins, strikeouts, ERA and WAR in 2022. Webb yielded two earned runs or less in eight of his final 10 starts and posted a .215 opponent batting average away from home.
He’ll have his work cut out for him on Thursday, as the Bronx Bombers lineup is the primary reason they sport the second shortest World Series odds.
Giants vs Yankees Betting Trends
New York enters 2023 fresh off a season where they led MLB in home runs, while finishing second in scoring and fourth in OPS.
Reigning AL MVP odds champion Aaron Judge leads arguably baseball’s most potent lineup, with the big bats of Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and Gleyber Torres joining him. New this year is shortstop Anthony Volpe, and big things are expected from the rookie.

Volpe is a power, speed combination that boasted a 1.064 OPS in Spring Training, along with three homers and five steals. He’s one of the preseason AL ROY odds favorites, and gives the juggernaut Yankees even more firepower in the middle of the order.
San Fran meanwhile, is short on star power. This is a team that finished below average in the NL in slugging and OPS last season, and featured only one 20-homer man in Joc Pederson. Evan Longoria moved on to Arizona, but they are bringing in Michael Conforto.
The 30-year-old missed all of last season due to injury, but does have a three year stretch on his resume from 2017-2019 where he averaged 29 dingers per season.
Giants vs Yankees Predictions
Expect the Giants batters to struggle against Cole, in what should be favorable pitching conditions on Thursday. The cool temperatures and light hitting bats of San Francisco won’t expose Cole’s biggest weakness, which is the long ball.

As for New York’s lineup, the matchup versus Webb is tough enough to lean under in this game, despite the potency of the Yankees’ bats.
New York will have plenty of opportunities to pile up runs this season, but Game 1 of 162 will be a pitcher’s duel.
Pick: Under 7.5 (-120)
