Surging Giants Continue Wild Card Hunt Against Slumping Rockies
The San Francisco Giants will be looking to continue a steady run that has lifted them back into contention for a National League wild card when they open a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.
The Giants have emerged as one of the hottest teams in baseball since the end of June, going 21-8 over their past 29 outings. That run includes a steady pace on the road, where they have won 12 of 16, including a four-game sweep of the Rockies in mid-July.

However, the Giants have struggled with consistency this past week, alternating between wins and losses over their past seven outings, and will need better performances from their scheduled starters if they are to record consecutive series wins at Coors Field for the first time since 2012.
Friday’s scheduled starter Shaun Anderson surrendered five earned runs over 4.1 innings in Colorado on July 17, and has given up four or more earned runs in four of his past five outings, while Sunday’s expected starter, Tyler Beede, has allowed eight earned runs and 20 hits in 10.2 innings while taking the loss in his past two starts.
Giants vs Rockies Probable Starting Pitchers
Shaun Anderson | August 2 | Peter Lambert |
Madison Bumgarner |
August 3 | Miles Mikolas |
Tyler Beede | August 4 | Kyle Freeland |
The Rockies continued their midsummer swoon with a 5-1 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday to close out July on a dismal 6-20 run, dumping the club into last place in the NL West.
Colorado maintains a respectable 27-26 home record on the year, but have enjoyed little recent success at Coors Field, going 3-10 over their past 13 while surrendering 6.62 runs per game, and nine or more runs on seven occasions.

Complicating matters for the Rockies is a suddenly quiet offense, which has scored just 3.4 runs per game during the team’s current 1-4 overall run, and recorded two or fewer runs in six of their past 10 overall.
While that has contributed to a steady 5-0 run for the Under in totals betting, and has also extended Colorado’s losing streak in recent series to five.
Pick: Giants (+140)

Red Sox Look to Rebound in Four-Game Set With Yankees
The Boston Red Sox will try to salvage their fading hopes for a postseason berth when they open a four-game weekend series with the New York Yankees on Friday night.
The Red Sox travel to Yankee Stadium after getting swept in a three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays, extending their current losing streak to four games. Boston has surrendered eight runs per game during their current swoon, which leaves the club lagging 10.5 games back of the Yankees in the AL East standings.

4 losses in a row for Boston. They fall 12 games back of NYY in the loss column. 2 games under .500 at home. Just disgusting. Children haven’t eaten since Saturday. Gross.

The Red Sox’ current swoon comes in stark contrast to an impressive 9-4 run in mid-July that appeared to signal the club’s return to postseason contention. That surge featured an impressive series win over the Yankees at Fenway, during which they outscored New York by a 44-22 margin while taking three of four games.
However, the club has struggled in visits to the Bronx this season, losing four of five while scoring three or fewer runs on four occasions.

TBD | August 3 (Game 1) | Domingo German |

David Price | August 4 | J.A. Happ |
The Yankees have endured some struggles of their own as they prepare to host the Red Sox this weekend. New York has dropped six of ten overall, but has turned in steady results on home turf, going 22-8 in 30 contests since Memorial Day, and lifting their AL-leading home record to 39-18, and going undefeated in a home series since dropping two of three to the Chicago White Sox in mid-April.

However, the club’s penchant for giving up big run totals has not been limited to dates with the Red Sox. The Yankees have allowed 8.2 runs per game during their current 4-6 run, fueling a 10-1 run for the Over, and are 0-6 in their past six home dates with Boston when allowing more than three runs.
Pick: Yankees (-135)
