The San Diego Padres hope to turn the tables on the visiting Chicago Cubs when the teams open a three-game series at 10:10 p.m. ET Monday at Petco Park.
The Cubs (33-26) swept a three-game series last week from the Padres at Wrigley Field. That gave Chicago nine wins in 10 games, though its momentum was halted over the weekend when it lost three times in a four-game series against the Giants in San Francisco.
The Padres (36-25) have lost six of their last eight games after splitting a four-game weekend series with the New York Mets at home. However, San Diego is favored Monday.
The pitching matchup features a pair of rookies as Adbert Alzolay (4-4, 3.62 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Cubs against left-hander Ryan Weathers (2-2, 2.06).

Alzolay Tries to Do It Again
Alzolay beat the Padres last Wednesday in Chicago. In five innings, he allowed one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking one.
In his last three starts, Alzolay is 2-1 with a 1.53 ERA. He also has 19 strikeouts and four walks in 17.2 innings during that span.

That is part of a larger streak in which Alzolay has allowed three runs or less in nine straight outings.
Alzolay has pitched at least six innings three times in 10 starts this season. He has notched quality starts in each of those games.
The start last week was the first of his career against the Padres. This will be his first time pitching at Petco Park.

During their current 2-6 stretch, the Padres have scored four runs or less in all eight games.
Weathers Looks to Bounce Back
Weathers also faced the Cubs his last time out in what turned out to be the worst start of his young career. In taking the loss at Wrigley Field last Tuesday, Weathers yielded four runs and seven hits in five innings with two strikeouts and one walk.
Weather has not pitched more than 5.2 innings in any of his seven starts this season. He has also made five relief appearances.

Petco Park has been a comfortable place for Weathers to pitch as he is 0-1 with a fine 1.93 ERA in six games there this season, including three starts. He has pitched well on the road, too, going 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA in four starts and two relief appearances.
This will be Weathers’ second career appearance against the Cubs.

The 29-year-old had hit four career homers in 43 games prior to this season.
Cubs shortstop Javier Baez is questionable after leaving Sunday’s win over the Giants right thumb soreness.
Outfielder Joc Pederson is likely to play. He sat out Sunday a day after leaving a loss to the Giants with lower back tightness.
Outfielder Jake Marisnick could be activated from the injured list. He has been out since May 10 with a strained right hamstring.
Sunday’s Results
The Cubs salvaged the finale of their series in San Francisco on Sunday with a 4-3 victory over the Giants as Wisdom hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs.
Kyle Hendricks (7-4) won his fifth straight start, allowing three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Craig Kimbrel struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 14th save.

Meanwhile, the Padres lost to the Mets 6-2 as Chris Paddack (2-5) dropped to 1-4 in his last seven starts, giving up three runs and six hits in six innings.
Continuing a Trend
The Cubs’ sweep of the Padres last week continued a recent trend.
Chicago won the season series in both 2018 and 2019 by a combined 9-5. The teams did not play last year during the pandemic-shortened season.
Let’s figure on this trend continuing if for no other reason than this T-shirt spotted outside Wrigley Field last week.
